DD is 3 and has been day toilet trained for well over a year! However, she is totally not trained at night. She won't poo at night, but clearly subconsciously wees in her nappy. She is even getting quite frustrated herself at this - wants to be a big girl and wear undies to bed. I have told her that she needs to have a dry nappy (originally for 3 nights in a row, but now I'll settle for one night!). She understands and says she won't wet, and in the morning says she didn't do any wees, but she has and hasn't realised. I am now using pull ups at night in the hope that she feels the wetness, but still no change. I have also tried putting her on the toilet before we go to bed at night - she has done a wee pretty much in her sleep, but still wets during the night. We have left the toilet light on and discussed how she can get up and go herself, but I just think the thought doesn't occur to her once she's deep in sleep.
I don't know if there's anything else I can do other than wait for a magical night when it all happens? Ideally she'd be night trained before new bubs arrives in November, but it's no big deal. More it's her disappointment in it that bothers me. I'm not really prepared just to go with the undies, and hope she doesn't wet, I can't be bothered getting up and changing the sheets - I'm getting little sleep as it is at the moment, but if that's the way to do it, I guess I can give it a go!
In my experience, night training will just happen. DS1 was around 3 when he was out of night nappies, and in retrospect it was far too early as he had lots of accidents (and still does now). DS2 is almost 5 and still in night nappies. I have tried restricting liquids at night, waking him for a pee in the night, pullups, leaving the toilet light on, leaving a potty next to his bed, and nothing has worked. Girltwin is 2.5 years and will be out of them tomorrow if she has another dry night tonight. I believe it is a hormonal thing that decides when they are ready, and no amount of encouragement will work if they are not ready.
:yeahthat:
My DD is nearly 4 and a half and has been day trained for over 2years. She just doesn't feel it and is a very heavy sleeper. We've tried all the 'recommended' strategies, but I'm just going to wait it out. Often it is a familial thing as well - late night training. I know it runs in DH's family - all of them are very heavy sleepers too.
DS was ready to be toilet trained pre-2. Knew when he needed to go, what he needed to do. Just after the initial excitement of the potty, he decided he preferred nappies.
Age three and a half, toilet trained in a weekend and at the end of that week no night accidents.
Sometimes you just have to wait for the brain to click.
On the other hand, a friend of mine woke her daughter up, took her to the loo at her bedtime, then put her daughter back to bed. The girl was so sleepy that she didn't remember it the next day, but was dry at night every night her mother did that. After a while the mother could stop the night loo visits and the daughter was fine. Would that work for you or is your DD not a heavy sleeper?
