There are specifically sized newborn nappies out there - Bubblebubs do amazing nappies, among others.
But mostly, we tend to use flats on the NBs - you change them so often that it is just easier, you don't need quite as much absorbency because (with BF bubs anyway) most nappy changes are dirty too, so flats do a great job, dry easily and you can have stacks othem on hand quickly.
I wash every second day usually, or if we have had lots of nappy free time, then every third day.
