hi all you nappy sewing gurus!!!
a couple of questions:
I was wanting to get bamboo flats to use now as pocket stuffers and later as flat nappies, nurture nappies has them for $10 each, around 40cm x40cm I think. Could they be made cheaper than that?
-
Depends if you can get it for the wholesale price. Check out snapsaustralia because they had some in 2 metre lots for about $40 + postage. It would be economical to buy it that way but I guess only if you really need that much IYKWIM. We co-opped fleece from there and it was really nice.
-
Have to share cause im on a misison to make prefolds for this bub..I went to lincraft friday and they had bright purple, red, blue, white and I cant remember the other colour, terry towelling there for $12 a metre. I think its best if mazzi moo goes down there when my $$$ is through from centerlink and gets me a meter or 2 of each.
Rissi - email me with what you want. I might be able to help you out
Sammi - go and get that machine...what a trade in price. I wish they had offered that here.
-
i saw gorgeous embroidered fleece in the SL cataglogue this week, so lush! made me wish i could sew!!!
-
Hello ladies, I'm having a small issue with my bamboo fleece, i was unable to get access to a sewing machine so i ended up just cutting them in to inserts (trifolds), they are fine apart from the edges which have rolled up through washing and use and i'm wondering if theres anything i can do apart from sewing which could fix this? would re-cutting them with a pair of pinking shears help?
-
Hey there! Not sure...you don't want to keep cutting them into trifolds though do you, cos otherwise you'll run out of material! :p Do you live near someone with a sewing machine?
-
Don't recut them! Don't know if pinking them would stop the curling. It may help with fraying though. Beg...borrow...or steal a machine perhaps.
I think ironing them would get rid of the curly bits but ugh at doing that every time you wash them.
-
Hmmm I would offer to stitch around th eedge for you but I am sure you are too far away from me (if your who I think you are). MMMM or maybe even go to your local sewing shop & ask if they would mind doing it??
-
-
WOO HOO FJ
Were abouts do you live matie? Maybe one of us is close enough to OV the edges for you
-
FJ lol yes its me ;)
Maz i'll pm you mate!
I saw a machine in this weeks spotters catalogue for $149, would that be an alright machine, bearing in mind i would never sew anything fancy?
-
Who was it that said they had gotten some MM fleece of the lady on Ebay, remember a while back I said I was getting some & then didn't. Someone, I think Mel maybe?? Was asking about it or said she had gotten some from the same seller before... Anyway I want to know what weight it is, the seller either doesn't know or can't be bothered to reply. I got some (arrived today) & I want to make some covers from it. But I don't know if I should use 2 layers or I will be ok with 1. I can't even be 100% sure that it is MM fleece, I justhave to trust the ebay seller. Anyway, does this ring anybells....
-
FJ 'twas Maz and I (we went halves).
I haven't made anything with mine yet as I've got issues with thickness and mums old machine hence the walking foot post the other day *sigh*
I'm sure Maz made some flongies for Vy and was most pleased with it. She will correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure it is 200wt which would be fine for day use. Don't think it would be enough on it's own for night maybe 2 layers but it would be very bulky. I'm sure micro fleece would give it that extra but of water resistance. With fleece covers you may still feel a bit of dampness on the clothes because it lets the moisture evaporate IYKWIM.
Ourlux the only thing I would say about getting a cheaper machine is to have a good look about before you buy it. You can get some great machines for a little bit more and you never know...you might end up finding a new hobby. Once you've tacked something small it's only a matter of time before you get the urge to tackle something more complicated ;)
Also have a look at the sewing machine stores. My local Spotlight totally sucks for service in the sewing machine department and if yours is the same and you're having troubles then I don't like your chances of getting any questions answered. When I was in an independant store getting parts ordered for mine the other day they had some nice looking new machines for about $200 and even some reconditioned ones.
-
Sammi and FJ - Ive used those flongies over night and they were great and only one layer..only problem is that it gets balls (I think I sewed them up the wrong way).
FJ - I had alot of trouble with that lady...she only sent us 2.5 meters and it took me to go to paypal (cause she didnt answer my emails either) to get the other .5 meter.
IM waiting for my new snaps...and lincraft have 2-% of fleece at the moment...hmm need to buy some black.....
-
mmmm Must make sure i messure it before I cut it then. I will go do that now.
I meet the lady from WildC hild Nappies today. Very Nice lady.
-
Well its all there.
I might use it for Flongies & maybe a cover or 2 .
-
That's good FJ! Would seem to be a habit of hers if yours was short too...
-
I just ordered the last monkey fleece from Lmour...I want to make a pair of flongies for Vy and some covers...i love it
-
I made some FLongies sofar & what I did was just made them 1 layer & then I have made some little shorts out of the microfleece & another out of the MM fleece so I can snap (gotta love this snap press LOL) in the extra layers depending on what she is wearing the flongies for. Good Idea hey!
-
thats an excellent idea FJ - good thinking 99.
did the $$ hit your account from me?
-
LMAO Maz, I read your post as "Did the **** hit the fan"
I just seen " $$ hit" & my brain automatically read "did the **** hit the fan" LOL
Yes I got it. Thanks again for the extra too!
-
PMSL - i didnt even realise..heheheheh
Tanya the ****ie sent me the wrong fleece so I hav eto send it back, I cant keep it but im hanging to see what it looks like...hmmm might have to put some extra funds into her account if I like it..heheheheh
Sammi - that cover I told you about...WOW I am having fun doing it. Jed Peed himself at it.
-
Maz I'm very excited  Can't wait!
ROFL I had to look twice at that too ;) You got the wrong fleece you say? Lucky she didn't send your fleece off to someone else and the person decided to keep it!
FJ I was thinking about your longies last night when I was up settling Caleb (must have you on the brain ;) ) anyway if you sewed them up on your sewing machine do you think the leaking could be wicking from the cotton where you sewed the seams together?
I'm going to recycle one of Angies jumpers that he has ripped into a nappy for Caleb. It's a V8 Supercars jumper so hopefully it'll turn out alright :crossfingers: I just have to peel it off him first
-
I used a poly thread so souldn't be. I have lanoised them since & she has done a day nap in them with no prob. I would say it was the non lanolised cover with a non broken in Sandman.
-
That's great the the lanolising has helped :D How many washes has the sandman had now?
-
oh sammi I cant wait to see what you come up with
-
mmmm probably at least 7 or more. It held up well lastnight actually. It was wet through to the outter layer but not all over just down the sides. But Isla did a massive poo in it & it leaked :(. But it was a big poo LOL
ETA- Sammi, do you think that fleece is MM fleece for sure? I was in spotlight today & was looking at some heavy polar fleece & I have to say that I would not have been able to pick the difference if the two were put side by side. Has me concerned that I just paid $22 for stuff I could have got at SL for $8.99/m!
Do you think I should ask the seller to provide some sort of proof that its MM Fleece? Its was the same width & everything. I'm worried I have been ripped off...
-
she wont answer you now FJ...she didnt answer me until i went through Paypal whne she short cut Sammi and me
-
hmmmm I think I already left feedback too. I might wait till she has more listed & get my sister to "ask seller a question" to see if she gets a answer. Pretty bad form to not reply.
-
FJ i have an abbey gro AIO night nappy made from MM inner and polar outer, it doesnt cut for us over night the bed was soaked so i use it for day onlt and it's fine, sometimes not all nappies and materials suit everyone, pain i know  i stick with BBB and wool covers for night
-
"Somebody" told me to not look at the pile but the centre layer. That is where the density is and is what gives the water resistance IYKWIM. That bit is more important that the texture. I've seen quite a few different textures with MM from flat and smooth to something that looks like teddy fur (Oooooh nice that is!) and they all have the nice thick dense middle layer.
TBH when I first looked at it I was sus but there are so many different types that it could be MM but not one that I've seen. Have a look at the website and all the little letter at the bottom of the swatches mean different things and finishes. Very confusing!
-
Well she did reply, said she didn't know. I stil have my doubts especially now that I have washed the flongies I made. They look really crappy now :( heaps of pilling! Oh well, lesson learnt!
Anyone able to point me in the right direction of any australian based bamboo co-ops
? I feel that I have outgrown what SL has to offer in the way of nappy making...
-
FJ - I had the same problem with the fleece and it really peeved me!!!
I have bought some fleeces from l'amoure that have been great to work with.
-
If anyone is interested there is a seller on ebay selling a heap of microfibre pretty cheap too from what I can find online.
Maz, the fleece does seem thick but they way it came out the wash is so yuk! I am looking at getting some MM fleece from missymoo's
Hey also, would a medium weight wool work for covers? there is a seller on ebay selling wool material that is listed as medium weight...
-
FJ I had a thought about using some spotters microfleece over the outside of that fleece. It will be like the not so nice stuff is a hidden layer IYKWIM.
If I can be bothered I'll send a sample over to MM and ask if it's the real thing. If it's not I'll report the seller to ebay for selling counterfeit goods.
-
I just made a cover with the MM fleece & the microfleece on the outter. Just got to snap it then see how it goes.
-
Been doing a bit of sewing today.
Cut out 3 nappies using Honeyboy pattern the other day but made the rise a bit longer. Tried to get a bit done yesterday but was having all kinds of overlocker dramas. I nearly threw it out the window. Changed the needles, rethreaded the b@$tard thing twice and it still wasn't sewing the soaker pads properly. Tonight once the kids were all in bed I finally got the tension combination right - thank goodness.
The density of the bamboo was playing havoc with the left hand needle.
Anyhoo that darn Honeyboy pattern! Can anyone give me a good hint on how to do that leg seam allowance shifting fiasco? I'm seriously thinking of redrafting the pattern so that the inner layers are smaller so I don't have to shift the seam allowance about. The VeryBasic pattern is like that and it's so much easier but I like the fit of the Honeyboy on Caleb.
*sigh*
-
Cat might know Sammi?
I hear you on the overlocker tension - it can be difficult to get it just right hey.
-
Yay one of my own creations lasted the night! I'm sooooo happy :D
It's kind of a Very Basic/Honeyboy hybrid...
I made a Very Basic AIO with a MM fleece outer with front snaps. The inner has a bamboo layer hidden with a 2 layer soaker pad and I made a lay in booster with 2 layers of bamboo with a microfleece topper :D
It was even dry at the back because Caleb is a tummy sleeper
-
That's great Sammi! It sounds really good.
