Agree 100%. And this is coming from someone who has a family member who screwed up his life because of cannabis, and I still feel that way. In fact, if it were legal, he wouldn't have had to resort to some measures that he did. So silly that so many other drugs are legal yet cannabis is not.

The other stupid thing is that they have done a lot of research into using marijuana as medicine and it is really effective for a few things yet it is still illegal but synthetic drugs that are less effective are legal.

And the worse thing is the side effects of the other drugs...awful side effects where as the weed...for him...nothing (except me having to drive to the shop because he decided he does want those Paddle Pops after all )

ETA I would like to hear opinions from the other side too...anti legalising...

Rach this one is actually something me and my DP have discussed so many times since I got ill. I used to smoke it before TTC to help with pain and nausea and to lessen the amount of morphine I was taking. I think it can have great medicinal uses. They should legalise it. xxx

i disagree with it being legalised. i too have had things happen too close to home. i understand though that people do smoke for recreational purposes and carry on their lives just fine. but also i have never met a smoker that was intelligent (by that i mean someone that smokes more than just recreational). kinda like iv never met a tobacco smoker with nice breath.

sorry CQ, i guess i havent come across a vapourer (is that the correct term). does it affect them differently? i honestly didnt mean to offend. its just my experience. in saying that, my brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia (triggered from drug use in his teens). he has since gone on to complete several science degrees!!

the government dont want to make it legal coz they cant tax it like alcohol or ciggarettes because its a plant u can grow

The patches (Norspan ) are really good. My Dh was on Oxycontin 50mg and 30mg endone a day and it knocked him around too.. The dr suggested Norspan patches and he only had to wear two and change them weekly, now his pain is under control. (He has chronic severe pancreatitis)

Dh actually had more bad episodes on the oxycontin than I have seen from his use of any other drugs , ever, he became delusional even, he would think peole were in the room that werent, probably another drug that will soon be taken off the market like Stilnox was.....

I recommend the patches 100%, ask him to ask his dr about them....

Legalising Marijuana, well i dont think the Aus government would be able to keep up with the demand
In America when they legalised it for medicinal purposes the price of hemp etc actually went down so much , i dont think the government really benefited that much so the $$ incentive wouldnt be there for australia.

Marijuana does not CAUSE mental health issues it simply makes them more obvious and that it a whole explanantion for another time...

Drug Psychosis is caused by the brains inability to process the effects of the drug. This is more common with opiates than any other type of drug...or a mixture of drugs (honestly its more common with prescription drugs too)

Studies in Jamacia (sp?) on women smoking marijuana during pregnancy and through breastfeeding for 2 years also show , the women that smoked to have more intelligent babies, meeting milestones first, with less medical problems, deformities etc than the group that didnt smoke. The babies also learnt to walk, talk, count etc first.... there is some alarming evidence in recent years supporting maijuana for way more than pain relief options.... the study also showed the babies cried less, were comforted easier etc... worth reading... just google it (it think the study was completed in 2008)

Legalised heroin is methadone i- but it is a synthetic form of the drug with "less withdrawals" supposedly making it easier to function and not having the "high" (or low) that heroin has...

It's been shown to work on many things - medicinally speaking - in other countries so why not here?

We've always told my fil he should smoke up cos he suffers terribly with arthritis and I've seen shows that it's extremely helpful for helping arthritis sufferers.

I had clients in the past that used to have it in tablet form for management of pain. His palative care specialist should be able to give him alternative drug therapy options.

I agree with Onyx and PZ. . I remember doing a debate about it in year 11 (hmmm about 17 or so years ago. ) We were arguing for legalisation and we whipped the opposition's butts, the argument for is so strong imo.

i'd say you have half your reason there

there is no way they can regulate and cash in on cannabis use so the big money players would be fighting to have it banned so they can continue to sell their expensive and often ineffective drugs.

That and conservative Australia is too scared that if they legalise marijuana it will unleash a zombie apocalypse.

Also most of our politicians have got no balls so they won't do anything that will upset the conservative constituents.

I think you've got it! Our health system is happy to hand out legalised heroin like its going out of fashion but say the word marijuana and people freak out! I think it's similar to hemp, a fantastic product that could help our society but it's a word with lots of associations so it's hard to market.

I'm not sure about triggering mental issues, that's tough, but triggering isn't the same as causing and oxycontin can cause some pretty nasty delusional episodes anyhow...
