We had to get a themed/brightly coloured bed to entice DS1 in to it because we had co-slept with him for over 2 years in our bed, so making the transition was really hard. But because the bed was so cute it did appeal to him. But I would probably have gotten something more neutral if that wasn't the case because he's 3+ now and not really in to winnie the pooh, so will be getting him another new bed anyway. Probably go for a king single that will see him in to his teens.
