havnt read peoples replys but i can say that we would have spent alot if we had bought everything, a friend gave us a lovely cot, i scoured charity shops and second hand furniture places till i found the perfect chest of draws i was looking for that had a fold out top which was a change table too, a friend of ours made me a lovely book case, shaped like a dolls house, which i love. and i found a nice chair that with a throw and a few cushions worked for a few years. and the pram that the in laws bought had a bassinet attachment that we used at night for a few weeks BUT......after looking at our lovely nursery for months waiting for baby, the reality of actually HAVING a baby was that none of it really got used, baby slept in with us so the cot never really got used. the change table a bit in the beginning but the fold out top bit comes off and its now a lovely chest of drawers. the book shelf is GREAT and FULL. but i wouldnt go out and spend a fortune on getting everything off the LIST. all they need is love, nappies and a few clothes. the rest is just fluff really, get what you can afford but dont run around fitting ut a whole room just cause its nice to look at!

    very little.
second hand bassinet $20 ($10 for custom foam mattress)
second hand cot, free ($100 for new mattress) - never used and dd is nearly 2.
    second hand change table/dresser $30
    built in robes
decorating was cheap, wall stickers and some nice mats
    everything pretty much matches too
I spent more on cloth nappies and my baby carriers!

I bought minimal stuff initially but then have added to it over the 2.5 years...

to start I had bassinet for $120, chest of drawers from ikea $250, changing mat on top $20, decal on wall $100 (my little extravagance which made the room!), we used swaddles and then sleeping bags until he was 2 so just bought a couple of bottom sheets for maybe $50.

then later bought a cot from ikea (maybe $200), and an ikea expedit unit for toys (seeing a theme yet??) , and now have just changed it into a "big boy room" with yep, you guessed it, an ikea toddler bed and little bedside table, for maybe $300. I spent $100 on some custom linen from etsy cos I couldn'd find anything I liked. I LOVE his room. It's perfect! All the furniture is ikea but it doesn't look like an ikea catalogue because all the little accessories and linen, and awesome wall decal personalise it.

And of course, as you know AJ, I am hoping to use the bassinet and cot again...

Not finished outfitting everything yet but I think ours will end up about $2000-3000. Splurged on a second hand Stokke cot and change table $980. About $500 on Babu linen and blankets - another splurge. I haven't got any drawers yet but will probably get something from Ikea if needed and make space on existing bookshelves for plenty of small fabric storage cubes. Not planning on any fancy decals or wall art, might just get a couple of framed prints down the track when baby is big enough to appreciate them as we'll probably move house by then. The only thing I'm undecided on is a breastfeeding rocker/glider. Currently will probably just try and make do with some combination of our old couch, poang and fitball. Not sure if it counts as nursery but we've bought a second hand stroller under $200 and I'm not game to add up how much I've spent on a second hand ergo and several woven wraps (I'm classifying them as part of my wardrobe so they don't count :-D) Sister in law and I are making a baby gym mat (although I doubt it will be any cheaper than a bought one with the indulgent fabrics we're likely to choose). We've been lent a baby bath and a 0-6 month car capsule by close friends which will save us heaps. And I'm looking for a second hand baby bouncer/rocker/swing but that should be under $50. I'll put off buying a breast pump till I see how breast feeding is going since I think I'll either wean when I go back to work at 6 months or spend a fortune on a double electric pump if I decide it's worth the effort of trying to keep going.

I'm sure we could have done things much cheaper. (I'm still amazed I managed to talk DH into the Stokke cot when an Ikea one would honestly have worked fine.) Equally I'm sure you can spend a lot more if you get a whole furniture package and decorate all your walls. It all just comes down to personal taste. I'm pretty sure we'll all remember what these nurseries look like far more than our children ever will.
