I've always used my nappy bag as my handbag as well. most of them come with separate 'parents pockets' that are tricky for little hands to open and that have a spot for your purse, mobile phone, keys and anything else you might want to throw in that you don't want your curious toddler getting access to. once my kids have gotten a bit older, I have started using my old hangbags again and I keep the nappy bag stocked with nappies etc in the car. but if we're going to be out of the car for more than an hour, I usually still bring the nappy bag (with my bits and pieces in it) because my kids will usually want a snack or something in that time.
I just figure 1 bag plus baby is enough to juggle. It's easier for me to just have my nappy bag hanging on the pram and I know everything is in there. I would steer away from the baby gender specific nappy bags because a nappy bag is one thing you'll probably get use out of for a second baby...
I've always had the practical, non stylish Kappoochi mini backpack but if I were buying a new one now, I would definitely splurge on something a bit 'nicer' since you take it with you everywhere for the first 6 months, it's nice to have something you like! having said that, a backpack is handy from time to time so I don't know...
