    Baby Monitor Question's

Just wanting to get some opinions/suggestions on baby monitors. At the moment we don't use one as we live in a smallish unit and Austin's room is right next to ours.

However we've decided to upgrade to something with a bit more legroom

This will mean Aussie's a bit further away from us and I wont be able to hear every little grunt at night. I don't feel comfortable not being able to hear him so I want to bet a baby monitor. I've been looking at the Avent monitor, has anyone tried this? or can you suggest an alternative?

Do the monitors make a lot of noise?

Any info anyone has would be great, we're willing to spend if it means we'll get a good one, I just don't want to spend lots of $$$ to get something that we might not end up using much kwim?

    Thanks in advance everyone!!

If you get one with lights make sure the lights can be turned off if don't need them, I have to hide ours so can't see the lights (5 or so lights which light up when there is noise and often DD sings in her sleep and the lights bothered us more than the noise)

We got one early on with DS but ended up packing it up and not using it cos the noise was soooo bad. I think it was a Tommee Tippee one. We got a lot of feedback noise and I couldn't get any rest with it next to me (even a one hour stretch at night in those early days would have been nice & I wasn't going to let a bleeding monitor keep me awake LOL!)

PLus DS was in the room right next to us, door open so we could hear everything.

wysiwyg - lol I can see how that would get frustrating!

Infinity - That's what I was worried about, I've heard that static can be really bad. I wouldn't worry about it if we were staying her. Unfortunately in the new house the master b/room is a living area away from the other 2 rooms. I might see how we go the first night or so, or look into hiring one before we buy.

    Thanks Girls!

    Hi Lindsaymaree,

I highly recommend the Oricom Secure Digital moniters. I have the Secure 200 which is fantastic, and my sister has two, the Secure 100 and 300 (i think) and she hasn't had any problems either. Mine plays music (about 5 different lullaby's), it has a night light on baby moniter and torch on parent one, displays room temperature and has virtually no noise/static feedback. The only problem I have had with mine is that it has a slightly annoying temperature alarm which beeps when the baby's room gets too hot (Max 27 deg) or cold (min 16 deg). You can turn the alarm off which is good as the temp range is pretty limited, but the temperature display still flashes - this is not noticable though.

This is the third moniter I have had - the first I bought was the Tomy Walkabout Premier which had terrible noise/feedback - to the point of waking me with a 'train-like' noise in the middle of the night!! I then bought a Roger Armstrong Sleep Easy Light and Sound which was cheaper than the Tomy but had less features. It worked fairly well but it too had a little bit of feedback, especially if mobile phones or electrical appliances are plugged in close by. The biggest problem with this one though was the rechargable battery on the parent unit - it went flat within 2 minutes of being off the charger base, so you couldn't take it into another room or outside, something I often do when DS is having his daytime nap.

    Hope this helps.

    Lou.
