i have the valco runabout setup with toddler seat too and i has been great. As for the sun issue you can get a hood that fits over the toddler seat - we have one as we were still in Townsville when no.2 was born and it worked really well at keeping the sun off - i think it was only about $30. I don't use the pram much at the mo as both boys walk everywhere - or get put in a trolley when shopping - but it's about to get a whole lot more use and im really happy that we have the tod seat for when Wills does get tired. We did also have a side by side pram - maclaren for when they were younger for the day trips so they could both sleep but didn't end up using that too much as it was so wide and not as easy to push as the three wheeler.
