I used a toddler bed for DS1 when he was 23 months old and he took to it really well. It was nice and low to the floor and I put a portacot foam mattress on the floor next to it in case he rolled out. The first night I put him in it he was a little upset so I just lay down next to him and he happily went to sleep. We had no problems after that
My own feelings about toddler sized beds is that personally I wouldn't bother. Because they are short length-wise their time of usefulness is going to be quite limited and before you know it you'll be looking for somewhere to store it so that you can fit a full single in the room. If being close to the floor is important to you i would instead invest in a single futon. Then at least you be able to fold it up and store it easily and also offer it to adult guests. Also buying a single futon means that you will only have to buy the next size up linen... ie go straight to single bed linen.
But you do what's needed. Luckily my toddler didn't have an issue with going into a full sized single. We have a king single futon though which is very handy to have in the house and easy to store.
DD put DS on a mattress on the floor for the first few weeks until he got used to the idea.
Not far to fall
What my Dad for my brother many years ago and we used the bed for our girls and I now have it here to make up for GS2 is to cut down an old bed and I think it takes cot size mattress. We used it for many years until we passed it on to other family members.
He is about the age I put DD2 into a bed as she could climb out.
Sounds like you have a climber there.
We have one for DD1 who went into it at 2yrs - she got it for her birthday. She loves it and we had no transition problems at all. She has always been small so a full sized bed was a bit scary for her too. I think she will be in this one at least for another year and then Miss J will take it over.
Also she has fallen out a couple of times and because it is so close to the floor she didn't even wake up! I just heard a thump and went in to check on her and she was on the floor
Bath - there already is a full sized single bed in the room and he absolutely hates it with a passion
Ive found a toddler bed for him on ebay - but it out for $95 with a mattress so the inlaws are bring it tomorrow. Its white like his cot so he should be alright with it and has safety sides on it also
I worry about him hitting his head. Ive seen him have enough fits to last me a life time.
We bought a single bed before DD was born and she will go straight from her cot into the single. To start with we'll just put the mattress on the floor to get her used to it and then we'll put it on the frame and buy some sides to attach to the frame. This will then be her bed probably until she moves out of home. It's a great mattress, well made and very comfy. Both DH and I have slept on the single bed at various times when DD was first born to allow the other to sleep undisturbed.
Our cot converted to a toddler bed too - worked well as it was all the same for DS. I have a friend who is converting theirs by taking off the side and stabilising it with bracing etc. Its one that doenst convert but they are changing it as they are not having any more kids and so buggering up a cot doesnt matter.
We got about 2 years use out of the toddler bed so well worth it for us (and two years as a cot so great for the money).
Our toddler bed is the same size as the cot - it uses the same mattress as our cot. I got one because we had to move DD in there at 17 months so DS could move into the cot and she seemed too little for a big bed.
DD loves her toddler bed. She fell out of it a few times early on, but we put pillows on the floor where she fell out and she never hurt herself, just got a fright.
The only problem I have with them is that they are very small and DD won't last too much longer (she is quite tall for her age). That's okay thought because DS will need the toddler bed by the end of the year as DS will move into it (bit of a side issue).
Ours was $99 from Target without a mattress (mattress was about $40) both on special. All the cot linen and blankets fit it so I didn't have to buy anthing extra like that, I just used what I already had.
BUGGER!!! I rang target and they said they didnt have any at al and never had ah doesnt matter now...looks like its just one more night in it (thank god)
Doudou - our cot isnt one that converts but with a bit of luck SIL will be pg soon and its all her's
We've bought one for DD (as DS will be requiring the cot she currently is sleeping in lol)...
Found it on special at Target for $99.
I'm concerned about getting DD to sleep in it - she'll only be about 20 mths when we'll need her to start sleeping in it (or until we move future DS from a bassinette into his own room). It was far too daunting to put my premmie baby into a big bed already - and it'll be handed down to DS in the future - so for $99 I'm not complaining.
