I like the idea of filling a toy box with toys that will be classic but will probably not be played with for years. Doesn't matter- children grow up eventually. Steiner wooden animals cost a mint- perhaps ask for those? And wooden stacking rings, blocks etc. Pull alongs. Those colourful shape steiner puzzles that are over $100 each. And tin toys are awesome- a spinning top & jack-in-the-box. Wooden baby toys aren't cheap either. Little teething toys and rattles. Wooden baby gym.
Books is a great idea too.
I really like the idea of charity donations. Maybe towards one of those charity gifts that has a child focus.
