I like the idea of filling a toy box with toys that will be classic but will probably not be played with for years. Doesn't matter- children grow up eventually. Steiner wooden animals cost a mint- perhaps ask for those? And wooden stacking rings, blocks etc. Pull alongs. Those colourful shape steiner puzzles that are over $100 each. And tin toys are awesome- a spinning top & jack-in-the-box. Wooden baby toys aren't cheap either. Little teething toys and rattles. Wooden baby gym.
Books is a great idea too.
I really like the idea of charity donations. Maybe towards one of those charity gifts that has a child focus.
Have asked for wooden and knitted toys. Is it being too precocious to ask for Oxfam shop toys? I love every single one available, and they sort of give twice...

Oxfam definitely give twice and is a great idea, i think it's fine to ask for that.
Oh.... A digital ear thermometer has also been a lifesaver for me.....
I don't think it's bad to ask for Oxfam things- gives people a direct idea of what to get and some people like you to tell them so they don't feel they get the wrong thing. I'd say Oxfam toys and instruments. I love all their instruments too.
Have you got a good nappy bag? Or a car organiser? (fold out thingy that you put in your car to sort all the babystuff that will be floating around later!)
Junglemum - totally doing cloth! I just don't trust the mortals to be able to get it right, so am taking responsibility for my own stash! These aren't the kind of people I know well enough to be able to ask for specifics, and there are a couple of cloth-haters among them.
meow - do you buy anything through EEEC? They have some gorgeous stuff, often Steiner inspired. (gotta love hijacking own thread into shop-talk!)
I haven't bought anything through eeec though I keep meaning too. I worked somewhere where our director was the secretary for eeec and we had all their things. The knitted blocks are gorgeous!
ETA: has anyone suggested an ABA membership? It's a great pressie. Also a subscription to Barefoot magazine.
