Thanks ladies - I've at least stopped crying now and that sick feeling is slowly going away. DD ran to DH when she saw him and said
DD: mummy crying daddy
DH: that's because you ran away and didn't tell mummy where you were going
DD: but daddy I just getting scamp
DH: you scared mummy that's all
DD: but I just getting scamp silly mummy.
They are just so innocent. She is sound asleep on the couch as we speak - exhausted from her outing obviously!!

What a godsend those boys were! I agree with calling the school and seeing if you can get in contact with them that way! I am sure their parents would appreciate knowing what an awesome thing their boys did! I am so glad everyone is safe and well and please don't beat yourself up gorgeous girl, it can happen to anyone
How frightening for you! What those boys did was just so wonderful. I hope you can find out who they are, and thank them, and let their families know what they did.
My DD2 has escaped from our house twice now. First time DD1 seen her and let me know. Second time I didn't even know, and a lady that lives around the corner bought her home.
I'm sorry this happened Dan... but can I just say, that image you have put in my head of you blubbering all over those school boys is a little something like this:
Gorgeous Dan who is unfortunately barefoot and hair loose so has gone wild as she's been running. Tears streaming down the face. Unable to make a coherent word let alone sentence. See's DD and runs to the boys. Has DS hanging off one hip, trying to pick up DD. All the while clawing at two boys, pulling them closer, trying to hug them, as they try to pull away and give each other "WTF?!" looks! Dan lets go and they bolt up the street.

MG, you put what i was thinking into words. Oh, to have been a bird in the tree viewing this.
It is a horrible feeling when your child/ren go missing, you just don't know which way to turn. So happy that these boys thought to sit down and wait for you to turn up instead of trying to find her home.
OMG How terrifying! Thank goodness for those boys. So many kids (or adults for that matter) wouldn't have bothered. Good luck finding them
ETA- Not the same but, I "lost" DS in the shopping centre a few weeks ago for about 30 seconds. WORST 30 SECONDS OF MY LIFE! and he was just behind the chair
I have no babies, but if i did, I'm sure there would be a time where I second guessed myself as a mother, judged myself and questioned my abilities. I also know, deep down, that none of my insecurities would be a reality. I hope you know the same babe. You are a wonderful mother, who is human. Your babies are too. Things are bound happen, and just thank god/the angels/the heavens above that everything worked out for you and your family!
It is ok. You are ok. And you deserve to be proud of the job you are doing.

FWIW my DD managed to get one of her chairs out the front 'unnoticed' and was standing at the gate trying to unlock it to let the dogs in.
I think it's the dogs, they lead them astray
