It's definitely not a 'pretty' thing, we tell our girls they are beautiful inside and out but she thinks it's 'pretty' IYKWIM.
It wouldn't be outside the home and I find it no different to her playing dress ups, stealing my heels & giggling while trying to wear my bra.

I'm in 2 minds really, don't want her growing up too quick but don't want to make a big deal out of experimenting with things IYKWIM?

It is what you make it, if its a part of dressing up and its a bit of fun at home and its not turned it to how beautiful make up makes you and you need it to look pretty then fine. if it becomes something they want to do every day i think id have a problem personally. When we stayed in the uk with my mum and sister they wear alot of makeup and i had to kick my sister when DD1 asked why she was putting all this stuff on her face and she said to make her self look pretty and nice....we went with ''cause she has dry skin and it makes her skin feel better'' ( i dont really wear makeup!)

Like helle said, its the pageant stuff i have a problem with!

Personally I think its too young but I'm not a big makeup wearer myself so that possibly affects my opinion. My concern is mainly based on what others have raised - that you need make up, beautiful clothes etc to be beautiful yourself.

The girls have little lipbalms that they can wear and they sometimes wear my "special" lipstick, which is pawpaw balm. Otherwise, we all have very sensitive skin and so I can only wear a couple of brands of makeup, which happen to be really expensive ones so I'm not too keen on the girls playing with it, and I don't want them using gross kiddy stuff with their skin. Mum put lipstick on the both once and they both had a huge reaction.

ZF - not a big fan here, but I will say that its probably because an IVF Buddy of mine has a 4 yo who is into calisthenics and dancing and is often made up like a grown woman with eyeliner, full foundation, lipstick etc and frankly it makes me feel a little sick. Her daughter who is very pretty naturally but is obsessed with looking 'beautiful' - I see a life of low self esteem ahead for her as she is already obsessed with making her self beautiful with makefup. It really frightens me should this next baby be a girl that I'd have things like this to worry about.

I'm a bit old fashioned though - I want to keep my kids as kids as long as possible - they have time for all that adult stuff later! I don't mind pretend play but I wouldn't actually purchase makeup at this age.

To me play makeup is no different to dolls, playing house or any of the other things. It's a form of mimicking. DD had play makeup as a kid, she also had plastic makeup and she loved it. Now at 10 she doesn't wear makeup, she's not obsessed by it or anything like that. She loves perfume more than she does makeup.

I never purchased it for her, it was always presents from other people. And like someone else mentioned I was a little funny about some of the cheap and nasty stuff due to chemicals etc.

She never wore it out. Just as she never wore her play high heels etc. And just like she doesn't ask for high heels now, she has "tween" makeup lip gloss etc and she doesn't wear it.

To me it was all part of the pretend play phase. It wasn't sexualising her no more than pretending to clean the house, or playing mums & dads.

My DD likes to put on eyeshadow and lipstick when I am putting make up on. She has her own lipsmackers lip balm & that was b/c she was helping herself to my makeup! I don't have a problem with putting on that sort of make up but I wouldn't allow her until she was in her teens if she was going to wear more of it & only for special occassions.
