You also don't want him to go and get his new favourite toy and bring it out for visitors... Do you!??????
LOL you just reminded me of Moo during his HPT obsession, screaming in Safeway because there was a box in the trolley that he wanted to get to! I gave in & he was waving them around the whole time we were in there

We live with MIL so I always make sure they are all safely packed away before we leave the bedroom... Door is always closed so that should be ok.

I don't see the problem with him knowing what they are and what they are used for?
Me neither. I'd be more worried about the choking risk.

I think condoms are among those things that, if you approach it in a matter-of-fact way from the beginning then you lay the groundowrk for it to be easy to talk about when they are older. And yes I know he's only 23 months but so what... I wouldn't put an age limit on being open with my kids
I remember my mum saying I used to follow her into the toilet & at age two or three I was trying to put tampons in my teddy bear

DD always follows me to the loo and knows what tampons are, where they go and what they are for.

Hehehe, kids huh? I agree about laying the groundwork for open communication.... never too early to start imo! What they don't *need* to know, is what they won't understand, so I just ramble on in the simplest terms I can think of and let them make of it what they will.
The DDs *love* helping me during my monthlies, too, it's hilarious DD1 used to follow me to the toilet for a chat and would give me a hug and offer me band-aids after seeing my 'lily-pad'... too cute! Now she knows it doesn't hurt (haven't got to the whole PMS/cramping thing yet!) and that she'll have the same thing when she's a grown-up It's all part of growing up, at least their concepts of these things is innocent and bodily-function based instead of being gross or weird

It wouldn't bother me as such, but it is something I'd probably try to find an alternative for - mostly because of the risk of them going in his mouth or being brought out when your MIL is visiting (ha!).

It does sound like he's more interested in the taking them out/putting them back than in what they actually are, so how about a box with flash cards of different animals or objects for him to take out and put back? Plus you get to see if he can identify the picture as well.

DD's fave toy a couple weeks back was a box of tampons. Like your DS, she took em out, put em back, took them out, threw them around the bedroom, picked them all up again. So I would say as long as he is being supervised, and doesnt know what they are, then it's not entirely inappropriate.
Yup, DS2 thinks that tampons make a great teether!!

I don't think there's anything wrong with him taking them out of the box and putting them back Makes sense - lots of toys have that crackly plastic inside them that make the same noise, and they're shiny and something new - fun fun fun!
FWIW my DD1 knows what condoms are and what they're used for, she thinks it's hilarious. She doesn't play with them any more now that she knows what they are, she used to rip the packets open and ask me to 'blow up the balloon' for her... now she sees a box and goes 'Yuck! They're for doodles!' and puts on a pair of my shoes to play with instead
