    What do I do???

My next door neighbour went into hosp with a fractured spine on Monday Night (result of him pulling off another dog that attacked his). I went over there to feed his dog this morning, (there were no evident wounds when I checked him Monday night) I noticed his fur was wet and saw a gash on his shoulder that had been oozing. I didn't see this wound and now fear that it could be infected. although he doesn't seem to be in pain.

I'm unsure as to what to do, I am unable to speak to my neighbour as the nurse won't let me by phone, was planning to go visit him today but not until this afternoon. I don't want to leave his dog. If I take him to the vet, do I have to foot the bill??? Which I sure won't be able to afford. I don't want my neighbour to think I neglected his dog He doesn't have any family around and his friend won't answer her phone.

    Any suggestions?

Oh, the poor dog. I think he needs to be seen by a vet. Do you think if you explained the situation to the vet they would be able to defer payment until he was well?

I'm not sure, I will do a ring around and see what they say, in the meantime my sister recommends bathing it in salt water and putting betadine on it. I don't want to make it worse...

Maybe take the dog to your RSPCA and explain what's happened? They may be able to treat the dog and board him until your neighbour is well enough to care for him. I'm guessing if it gets worse, the bills are going to be far bigger than what they are now.

I would call the vet for advice. Better then doing nothing. If in Victoria you can call the Lort Smith Animal Hospital.

What a day!! I ended up taking him in to the vet. I couldn't leave it. He needed to go under to clear out the wound and cut away dead tissue etc and antibiotics. So glad his owner was getting released today anyway. So went and picked him up, got money, back to the vet, then home, still have to pick up his dog when he is finished. Be glad when today is over!! Very grateful my mum came and looked after little one whilst I did all this running around.
