Hi everyone,
I am 8 weeks 3 days and had a big bleed last week in the evening which sent me to A&E - we expected the worst after a miscarriage last year. There was no pain, just a lot of blood and one small clot, and we were so surprised and relieved to find during the emergency ultrasound that bub was there, heart beating away and having grown another centimetre since our dating scan a week earlier. The hospital ultrasound and a subsequent specialist scan the next day showed I have a 5cm x 3cm x 1cm area that the bleed came from, to the left of the gestational sac.
When I was in emergency they also found I was dehydrated and low BP so gave me a bag of saline as well. I had taken a long walk on a hot day the day previously and had developed a dehydration headache but thought nothing of it.
Since then I have had brown/red/pink spotting. There was still about 8ml of blood in the area that the sonographer said could come out or could be reabsorbed. My Gp said no heavy lifting and has me on hydralyte as my BP was still low again the next day. Repeat scan next week to see if area has increased or decreased in size.
Interestingly, with both of my previous successful pregnancies, I also had a small amount of brown blood at exactly the same time - 8 weeks - but nothing like last week with a gush of bright red. The sonographer thinks that perhaps the area the bleed cam from was placed close enough to the cervix that the blood was able to flow right out, where previous ones may have taken a while to get out hence the brown blood on those occasions.
I have read some of the past threads on here about this happening - the sonographer said it was a subchorionic haematoma - and most have positive outcomes. Just wondering if anyone is going through this at the moment as well?
It is so stressful, every twinge and feeling down there sends my heart rate right up.
Hi balance, I had similar at 6 weeks. It was a subchorinic haematoma and I had bleeding for a couple of days and then spotting brown/pinkish for about 2 weeks afterwards. My pregnancy was fine after that and I now have a 9 month old I hope everything works out for you x
I too had a sub chorionic haematoma at 8 weeks, ended up in A&E after a big bright red gush of blood. They told me that the bleeding may start again if the bleed wasn't absorbed but never had any more bleeding. I'm now 35 weeks along, and everything has been fine since the early bleed.
It freaked me out at the time, but after talking with others I've come to realise they're VERY common.
Hi balance, sorry that you are experiencing this. It sucks. I too, had a big one which saw me in ED. I had one initial painless bright red gush plus another one s few days layer. All up, I think I bled for about four or five weeks but my two little girls arrived safe and sound, right when they were supposed to. Good luck, hope it resolves quickly and you can get on with enjoying your pregnancy.
Thanks everyone for your reassuring replies. Good to hear the positive outcomes. I am still spotting, brown and red, with a follow up scan due next week. I am guessing the spotting is normal in this situation? Had my hcg levels tested 4th day apart yesterday as well, should know results today.
I starting bleeding at 12 weeks, trip to the emergency department in the middle of the night thinking the worse, but couldn't get in for a scan until the next afternoon. The longest 12hrs of my life! Scan showed bub's heart beating away. What a relief!! Then back to emergency department to get results from the scan to be told it was a Subchorionic Haemotoma that caused the bleeding. I freaked out again, thinking the worst. I bled/spotted on and off until around 20 weeks. If I were too active, I'd start spotting again. I tried to stick to light duties only. My baby is now a happy, healthy 9 month old!
I did ask for an extra scan around 16 (?) weeks, as it was my third pregnancy and I was still spotting and hadn't felt any movement yet. All was fine
Hi balance, another successful story here I bleed from wk 5 to w9 and it was a totally stressful time. I know what you are going through. But know that they are extremely common and the chances of them going away by themselves are very high. Im 33 weeks now and all is well! Good luck hun I'm sure you will be fine. .
Thanks peekaboo and bunny feet. It's so stressful. Had another scan yesterday and bub is growing nicely, sch is still there, has reduced slightly. Can i ask while yours went away did you only spot/bleed brown blood or was there sometimes red as well?
Both balance, I had spotting and also some red blood every few days. Great news Bub is growing well! You'll get there hun, hang in there. My motto to get me through that time was "expect the best" try to believe everything will be ok as I am sure that it will. Good luck hun
Hi, quick update, 3rd scan in 3 weeks today showed SCH still there, still same size but the spotting has stopped for past week and bubs is growing well. Won't have another scan now for 2 weeks which will be my 12 week scan. Hope to see it shrunk a bit by then, it has been 3 weeks now.
This thread is a little old now, but was wondering how it all went? I had a huge bleed but with lots of pain at 10 weeks (and a few days). I got told it's a perisac hematoma which from googling i'm assuming it is the same thing as a SCH? I got told no excessive heavy lifting and not to overdo it and that's about it (fun when you are a mum and have your own cleaning business and doing a childcare certificate!!_). The bleeding only lasted a few hours and the pain for a couple days however it gradually lessened.
I got told the size of mine was about 30ml which is quite large. Still no more bleeding or pain. No scans planned either. Belly seems to be growing though so that's a good sign
Kirley, how scary for you. I had a SCH at 8 weeks and can report that I now have a healthy happy 10 week old little girl.
I just rested as much as I could for a few weeks and once I got the all clear at 12 week scan thought nothing more of it. I hope you can get done reassurance soon, but I'm sure you will be fine. All the best for the rest of your pregnancy.
Hi, thanks for checking in on me Kirley64. By my 19 week scan the sch had disappeared and I haven't had any additional issues. The dr from the ultrasound clinic ordered bloodwork with nuchal bloods at 12 weeks as there is apparently a marker that can show placental health/integrity and that came back clear as well. I am now 25 weeks. From what most ladies said in this thread they do eventually resolve. Best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy!
