I have been feeling queasy all day every day for just over 2 weeks now, and although I know it's part and parcel of pregnancy it has been getting me down over the last couple of days. As soon as I wake right up until my head hits the pillow at night I feel yucky - I've been having trouble concentrating at work, and the sick feeling just seems to consume my every thought and movement (or lack thereof). Is it this bad for anyone else, or have I just been unlucky? Has anyone got any tips on how I can feel a bit better about it all instead of feeling so down and sorry for myself?
I must admit that there were a couple of days where I thought that the queasiness was slowly going, and I then panicked that something was wrong! It came back with a vengeance though! I guess I just don't know what I want - I'll blame it on the pregnancy hormones!!!!
Travacalm works wonders...i took it at the start this time...(i only has slight nausea this time however..no vomitting) and it took the feeling away rather quickly!
I was on edge the whole time with DD1...never knew if it had gone or not....but when it did i was like FINALLY!!!!!
This is how I was with DD, it started when I was 6 weeks pg on a flight to Townsville and stayed until 12 weeks. I remember constantly asking will I ever feel 'normal' again? and the answer... yes! it does get better. I am sorry it is not much help, there was no miracle cure for me, it was horrible at the time but hey I am going back for a 2nd go so it can't have been that bad? can it? see how soon it is forgotten.
It does get better and then you will have your belly, then your baby, then m/s will be a distant memory
that you feel better soon.
ETA: Just remember ms is a good sign of a healthy pregnancy!!!
Kimbaz - I didn't even think of Travacalm - I gather it is safe to use then? I just presumed that I couldn't take anything at all! I've even been too scared to use Vicks when my nose is blocked!
suggestions that i've tried (after going through 10 of the past 12 weeks feeling exactly like you are now!)
- eat as soon as you wake up. i WAS having half a banana every morning, going back to sleep an hour, then having toast with cheese. this past week, i've started having yogurt, then back to sleep for an hour, and waking up to eggs on toast. sounds full on, but the protein in the two has made a mammoth difference. i've gone from unbearable nausea to niggling PITA
- ginger - lollies, drinks, biscuits - whatever you can stomach. i found the blackmores MS tabs worked for about 3 weeks, then nothing. ginger bikkies are good if i'm in the car and need a snack. i drink maybe half of a 300ml bottle of dry ginger ale when things get bad
- eat every couple of hours - don't forget. even if you feel ok, eat.
- avoid high sugar content things (lollies etc) where you can unless you're sucking on them (fruit tingles) to help with keeping blood sugar levels steady
- ask your doctor for a script for maxalon if things are bad
- don't be afraid to ask for alternatives - sea bands (travel bands) are fantastic
- vitamin b6 - i'm taking 100mg morning and night for the past week - it seems to be helping.
- rest when you need to. you're growing a human, so its understandable that your body is going to become easily fatigued!
- drink up!!! dehydration is the last thing you want - the more dehydrated you get, the worse the ms is! if you cant stomach water all the time (it can be harsh on your tum) try mineral waters or highly diluted cordial. try to make sure it's not too sweet - same deal as lollies - you don't want a high sugar rush and then to come crashing down!
umm, what else have i found helpful. potato is a good source of carbs which go into your system easily. i have spud of some sort most days at lunch. have a high protein dinner to carry you through the night - i would suggest meat and veg, egg if you can stomach it.
so long as you're eating healthy, eating small serves (if you're having five meals a day instead of three, the meals need to be smaller!), you should find it more managable
if all else fails, there are stronger options - one is a VERY exxy drug only approved on PBS for chemo patients, so although it works for the nausea, it costs a hell of a lot. the other option (only if suggested by your doctor) is phenergan - which helps with nausea, but also works as a sedative. my doc last week suggested this, so i have it in the house, but have, as yet, refused to use it. i can't see my ms being bad enough to require me to be sedated. i am also at home alone, and don't like the idea of not being able to get myself somewhere if something were to happen. IF i have to take it, i will be in contact with my family so that, if needed, someone is there for me - even if it's just for the comfort of knowing someone knows i'm sedated kwim?
don't be afraid to mention it to your carer - being pregnant is so exciting, but feeling cruddy just sucks! if you think you need help to cope (i was having anxiety attacks which were putting BP through the roof), then speak up
hope that helps

ETA - travelcalm has a pg safe version - check with your pharmacist first!
me me me - I have nausea 24/7!!! So you are not alone.
One thing that makes it bearable is a) I am so happy to be pregnant with # 1... and b) Its a good sign bubs is healthy (i yes, its there!!!)
I HAVE to eat a cracker before I get up out of bed in the morning... otherwise I will be sick!
Then I get on the train to work, put my ipod on and close my eyes and relax (usually whilst snacking on crackers)
At work I just try and snack when I can... I find water is making me abit sick too, so at lunch I will usually have a fizzy drink which settles me again.
Ive tried the ginger stuff with not much luck! I just hope that it passes soon!
i had it again this time, you need to find what works for you!!
i found very diluted apple juice great to sip on allllllll day, i also used seabands this time and did get some relief, as well as higher doses of Vitamin B.
I felt EXACTLY the same last time. This time wasn't so bad but it's probably because I knew it was going to end. Just keep telling yourself that. I took Blackmore's ms tabs but they didn't seem to do much. If you are vomiting a lot, then go see your doc. My nausea was shocking with my first pg but I didn't take any medication apart from the blackmore's. I just thought if I'm not spewing then really my body isn't going to fall apart from feeling nauseaus. I was soooooooooo tired though so I just made sure I went to bed really really early and every chance I got, I slept. I felt really lazy but I just physically couldn't do anything. I thought that it was never going to end but it gradually got more bearable until it was gone by about 13-14 weeks. Sounds like a long time but when it goes you'll have forgotten about it after a week of feeling much better. then the pregnancy glow sets in and nothing can stop you, especially when it's your first pg! I've got the glow happening now but it's not as extreme seeing as I'm running after a 10 month old. Like someone else said, we're going back for a second time so it does get better and the memory fades. Congratulations on your pregnancy and hope you feel better soon. Just take one day at a time and keep thinking it is soooooooo worth it! xxxx
Firstly congratulations on your pregnancy and as the other ladies have said ms is a good sign of a healthy pregnancy.
When I was pregnant with the twins I had quite severe ms. For me it started at 5 weeks and went until I was 18 weeks but that was with two bubbies.
Try a few different things and see what works for you. We are all different. Most of the stuff I tried has been mentioned above. I found for me eating small meals worked (I lived a vegemite on cruskits for a while ) And I was only able to keep a couple down at a time. I also was taking maxolon as I was vomiting about 6-8 times a day when the sickness was at its worse. I wasn't able to eat before getting out of bed because as soon as I stood up it all came back up again, but try that and see if it works.
As the other girls have said try and keep up your water because you don't want to get dehydrated. I found sucking on ice cubes was good too. And try to rest. For the first 18 weeks I did nothing other than go to work. When I was home my DH basically did everything and my Mum did my ironing and stuff as I wasn't able to. If someone offers help grab it with both hands!!!
Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy. I hope the ms eases for you soon.
Thanks everyone, I have actually found that Sunshine Pine Fruit Juice is going down nicely, and a friend put a packet of TUMS in my hand - they are working OK, obviously in minimal amounts... Will keep on keeping on
Oh i feel your pain i really do! I only found out on tuesday that i was pregnant and since sunday been feeling really nauseated to the point of throwing up. I find i have to eat constantly or ill get more sick. Which is hard to do at work! I honestly didnt think morning sickness starts this early i feel like climbing back into bed and going back to sleep!
Have been reading this thread with interest. I had bad m/s with all my other pregnancies but nothing seemed to work ie food and drink wise. But I didnt realise you could use Travelcalm and didnt think about seabands so thanks ladies am going to go try these today.
My m/s is all day and even goes through to the night to the point that some nights I am waking up crying because I feel so sick. I am just getting no relief at all. Last night I was lying in bed and kept waking up feeling dizzy - you know that feeling when you are really really drunk and the whole room is spinning? That was me.
I am so sick of it all and it is really getting me down this time around. I think the lack of sleep (DS still wakes during the night) is compounding the issue. Thank God for DH tho and his lack of expectations in the "household" dept as I am doing nothing atm and I feel so guilty about it.
