    Question First Ob app

    Hey all,

have my first ob appointment friday this week and really do not know what to expect as this is my first visit. I have had some bloods done through my gp a few weeks ago to test for things like HIV and other nasties but the results were to be sent to the ob, i am assuming nothing is wrong otherwise I would have heard from them.

Can anyone shed some light on what usually happens etc? what to expect?

    Cheers
    Nae x

i had my first appnt last friday at 8 and a half weeks, i was quite nervous. i had previously had most of my antenatal bloods done, when we started trying for a baby. he examined my abdomen and breasts, and then confirmed the pregnancy with an ultrasound in his rooms, and showed us the baby's heartbeat
then we had a general chat about things, he gave me some advice about work, food, exercise etc, i asked some of my qsts that i had. he asked if i wanted to talk about the dellivery now or later, and i prefer to talk about it later. we also talked about 12 week testing for down syndrome and what other tests/ultrasounds etc i will need.

At my first appt I was asked about my medical history and that of my partner including our families. He discussed a couple of things from the results of the bloods, particularly the fact that I have a negative blood group which can cause problems later on in the pregnancy. He shared with me the results of the tests too but all was good!

He discussed the 12 week scan and the 19 week scan, took my blood pressure and had a feel of my abdomen. He also did an ultrasound of my bub (first u/s - very exciting) and showed us various bits on the screen including the healthy heartbeat.

He gave me the chance to ask any questions and then sent me for my blood test for the 12 week scan and a urine test to make sure I didn't have any UTIs which need to be dealt with early.

Good luck! Treat it as a 'meet and greet' with your ob as there isn't much happening this early on!

    Thanks Agadoo and Mummy Tummy,

I forgot to mention I am 12 weeks and 4 days. I wasn't aware that they do a scan at 12 weeks, that will be exciting for hubby. I saw bubs hb at 6 weeks a sneaky peak because I was concerned after my mc last year but this was done by a sonographer under my gp direction.

The thought of the NT scan kinda freaks me out I am 32 this year and don't know if I had this test done what I would do if it came back in the risk of ds category.

I guess all I can do is take it easy and try to relax until Friday only 3 sleeps

    Hi NaeNae,

I'm 32 this year too and I treated the NT scan as any other scan - something to look forward to, to see bub again. Don't think about what you would do unless you are told you are high-risk, otherwise I think you will run the risk of causing yourself alot of angst, which has more chance of being nothing than something. And of course stress is not good for the baby.

Let us know how you get on!
