Foods - What NOT to eat.... ?

    Hi,

So i'm preggers again! About 3 weeks along. This is my second pregnancy but i have forgotten what i shouldn't be eating while pregnant. Please help me remember!

    So i have already cut back to only 2 coffees a day and might try for just the one if i can and absolutely no alcohol! And i know the following;

    No;
    Soft Cheeses (eg Camembert)
    Raw Egg
Raw meats (eg. cook steak all the way through, no pinkness)
    Raw seafood (eg. sushi)

    Now what i'm unsure about is;
Can i eat prawns??? For some reason i keep thinking i can't have this. Last time i was pregnant it didn't matter cos i never use to like seafood of any sort and i now i love it, especially prawns!

What about sliced meats like Ham, Turkey, Salami etc. Can i eat those or only say if it's heated to hot temp like in a quiche or toasted sandwich?

    Is there anything else?

i was pretty "flexible" with what i ate....

i only had deli meats in toasted sandwiches, i ate hot prawns only, no sushi, i had chicken from the chicken shop but made sure it was piping hot, i didnt have soft serve or salads when out, and didnt eat soft cheese unless it was cooked.

i also didnt have runny eggs

Oh yeah that's right. Soft Serve. You know since last time i was pregnant, i haven't had a soft serve ice cream or thickshake. Last time i was told by a friend who worked at Wendy's and McDonalds and said both shops don't clean their machines very often, and when they do they are lined with mold. She said it was such a gross job, no one wanted to do it. They was enough to put me off for life!!!

i ate like almost a kilo of prawns to myself with DS1 but i was just about fullterm too (i sound like a pig now, but i had massive cravings for them lol) i think your allowed them just not alot because of the mercury in them or something similar

    no runny eggs
    no soft cheeses
    no pink meat
you can eat cold meat as long as its off the bone not processed (shaved ham is off the bone just incase you didnt know)
certain fish your allowed only once a week or fortnight

thats all i basically worried about with both my kiddies!

be careful- shaved ham is not off the bone!
in fact the only ham that is not pressed and true ham is ham off the bone!
the rest is pressed bits and pieces moulded together with a gelatine

The risk with any deli food is high! remember they cut all the meat off the same slicer
dont forget to stay away from pre-cut salads as well
and stay away from chicken rolls unless they are piping hot
    the high lysteria foods are
    -rice
    -soft cheeses
    -chicken
    -raw meat
-soft serve (mc donalds clean their machines out to a schedule at least once a day- so unless they are a slack mc D- it wont be mouldy- but you dont know)
    -deli meats
    -pre made salads

also wash all your vegies and fruit properly and only buy pre cut fruit, freshly squeeze boost juices etc and vegies if they are labelled washed!!!
most lysteria is killed at high and low temps- its just knowing that they are being met is the problem!!

personally i was anal with what i ate when i was out- no hotdogs (no guarantee they are kept and right temp), no subway (no guarantee they are washed) no thickshakes etc unless made with scoop ice-cream and no freshly squeeze juices or boost juice types of drinks (they dont wash alot of their fruit and some of it is from overseas where the health standards are not the same as here!!) Definately no sushi, no baine marie food and no pre-prepared dishes.
i always requested food cooked fresh or I lived off hot chips for a bit lol
it was such a PITA but when things went haywire with my twins and they were in trouble, i knew that nothing i ate was responsible!!

the degree that you want to elimate food in your diet due to its risk is up to you personally
    these are just some guidelines

btw i worked in deli's for 10 years and i am a qualified food safety supervisor, trainer and assessor in one of my previous life's lol

also no raw food prepared out of your sight and control(that includes fruit smoothies and fruit crushes )
    no hot dogs
    no pate

this list honestly goes on and on

i was shocked when i was pregnant with my son when the midwife told me what i shouldnt be eaten and some of it was so hard to follow as i craved it

yup as long as it says it is off the bone it is real ham
but i would still stay clear- remember they shave it on a slicer with all the other meats!!!!!

also be careful of eggs, honey and things like custards, mousses etc

honey is ok as long as you get it from a reputable manufacturer- honey is a haven for botulism
hence why you should'nt give honey to children under 2 years old
i wouldnt be eating honey from a local market but a big company that screens their batches - you should be fine

    Rice??

You're kidding right? Ok possibly out of a rice cooker that'd been kept going all day (ie. Food court chinese type rice) maybe not so good but there's no reason that I can see to avoid freshly cooked rice at home or anything.

Mind you, I am missing my runny eggs. What I wouldn't give for a couple of nice soft boiled eggs with toast soldiers....

rice is fine as long as iti is fresh and served above 65 degrees
so you have to make sure you get it from somewhere that has good hygiene practices and correct temps
best to stay away from food court baine maries for the same reasons!!
