Im sure I am slow on the up take and this has already been discussed but does Swine Flu at our early stage have any effect on the baby? I have heard mixed reports...
My BF who is 34wks has been told to leave work there are 3 cases of Swine Flu. She is a teacher and so am I its slightly un-avoidable... its at my school too but there is no restrictions.
She said to leave work but I cant exactly take sick leave for the entire flu season....
As far as I know there isn't anything to say that swine flu has any additional effects early in pregnancy than any other flu.
Most of the pregnant women who are in hospital with it are late in their pregnancies and it is because of breathing difficulty partly because of the reduced lung capacity in later pregnancy and partly because of the reduced lung capacity because of the flu.
Having said that - high temperatures aren't good for you in early pregnancy and you wouldn't be able to take most cold and flu tablets.
If I were you I would just be sensible about it. Make sure that you you wash your hands regularly and avoid people who are obviously sick. And make sure that you see a Dr if you think that you might be getting the flu and are pregnant.
I hear you! I work in a public building and we have confirmed swine flu cases too... I would love to take the next few months off work, but that is so not gonna happen
I agree with Muppity, have heard similar things - its mostly late stage breathing difficulties, and high temps that are a concern. When I was pg with DD I got a bad case of bronchitis and had high temps, but panadol worked to lower that and we were both OK. I guess with swine flu we just have to be extra careful, and go to the Dr as soon as we get any symptoms, and do all we can to keep our temps normal. I think the media have hyped it up a bit, it's terribly sad that a baby has died, but that is a one-off case so far, isn't it?
Hope you can enjoy your pregnancy without worrying too much... and hope you have a DH like mine who has offered to do all the grocery shopping til the worst is over!!
I was in direct contact with someone infected with Swine Flu last Thurs night.... When he was diagnosed with it Friday I called my MW to ask her about it. She just said to stay away from other people for the incubation period (3 to 4 days) and to phone if I got a temperature, aches and pains, or vomiting.
My "quarantine" is now finished and I didn't get any symptoms thank goodness... you have to be really careful with any illness in pregnancy, not just swine flu... if you're feeling off or are concerned at all, call your MW. It's just not worth the risk.
