I know it's not a great idea to drink Coca-Cola or any cola type drinks while pregnant, but how safe is it to drink sarsaparilla? It's caffeine free. And licorice? Is it safe to eat licorice?
Hi Kbowman
I can't help with the sarsaparilla, I don't know what is in it. True licorice should be avoided during pregnancy as it has been associateds with preterm birth and can cause high blood pressure. However the occasional licorice flavoured lollies should be ok
I'm not sure but you could try the Sarsparilla Cordial?? thats so yummy that stuff, and you can have that with soda water.... probably wouldnt be so bad
If you like sars, you *must* try the Bundaberg Sarsparilla...made by the same company who make the yummy gingerbeer. BTW Sars is known as "root beer" in the US, I'm pretty sure it was traditionally brewed (non alcoholic) from the sarsparilla root in the same way ginger beer was brewed from ginger root. I drank it lots while pregnant and all good here!
You can have up to 300mgs caffeine a day.
1 cup of espresso = 150mg
1 cup of instant coffee = 80mg
1 cup of decaf coffee = 3mg
1 cup of tea = 50mg
1 can of coke = 40mg
1 cup of hot chocolate = 10mg
1 cup of chocolate milk = 5mg
30g of milk chocolate = 5mg
30g of dark chocolate = 20mg
30g of chocolate syrup = 5mg
I usually have a coffee most days, not all, but did avoid during the first trimester.
