    Zofran help!

Im 11w pg and suffering quite badly with what I suspect is a bit more than just ordinary m/s, so a bit of ginger and small meals, etc dont help.

Im on 16mg of Zofran a day, 8mg in the morning which seems to be effective for a couple of hours. Then 8mg in the afternoon which seems to do absolutely nothing apart from slightly reducing the number of vomiting episodes, but not enough to make a difference. The nausea is extreme during the afternoon/evening and my body tends to heat up so I feel very feverish (this happened before I took zofran too, so not a side effect). Nothing I try seems to help and its really getting me down. All I do is lie in my bed with a cold compress to cool me down, sometimes in the dark because light seems to make it worse, especially at night after 6pm. I havent gone to hospital because Im able to drink quite a bit of water and eat almost normally during the morning and lunch, so although I am somewhat dehydrated, I can re-hydrate myself n the morning.

So my questions - I thought zofran would help but it doesnt even touch the nausea in the afternoon/night. Is this normal? Did Zofran work for you and if so what dosage were you on? Also, what did you take to relieve the terrible constipation it causes (TMI warning - Its been 9 days since my last BM and I took metamucil yesterday with no luck).

Probably not what you want to hear but Zofran didn't work for me AT ALL not even a tiny little bit, when I was pregnant with DS.

I am wondering though (especially since you said you are light sensitive at night) if it could be migraines that you are getting.

Can't help you with the constipation issue though it never affected me that way.

i had hyperemesis last time and took zofran 4mg once a day. It was too expensive for me to take it more regularly. It was the only thing that got me through. It took the edge off but didn't stop the vomiting. My pregnancy previous to that though, it didn't help at all. As for the constipation. I had to get suppositories. Go to the chemist and get glycerin suppositories. It's the only thing that helped me. Not the most comfortable thing in the world but worth it! Good luck!

last pg, zofran didnt do anything, the only thing i found worked was natropathic drops called nux vomica (only stopped the vomiting but not most of the nausea). this time around zofran has helped, i started off taking 4mg morning and night so total of 8mg per day. it worked for the most part but sometimes only stopped me vomiting but not actually feeling sick. i am still taking zofran most mornings this pg.
it sounds like you are getting silent migraines in the arvo. i get them and that pretty much describes them perfectly. im not sure if that is a side effect of the zofran or maybe from getting dehydrated (what often causes mine)? i would call your HCP and check in case it is the zofran doing this.
as for the constipation i took double the recomended daily amount for a few of days at first to get things moving (which took a few days) then just kept taking normal amount every morning to keep everything moving.

HG, hun??? Or just really bad m/s??

I was on 4mg zofran 3-4 times a day, didnt help with nausea either but brought the vomitting down from 12 times to 8 a day. So it is helping to keep someting down, guess thats a bonus (although Im sure it doesnt feel like one!). Do you remember the drug that one of the girls was talking about in our HG thread?? perhaps you could look into that...I think its prednisole or something PLEASE CHECK that though, I'd hate to lead you up the garden path If I find the name I will be back to update. ETA: This is the name of it from the other thread....prednisolone, i was close
    you poor thing, its sucky

You poor thing. It is truly awful.

Have you tried maxalon or stemitil? Neither worked for me; neither did zofran.

I ended up on restavit. It is a sleeping tablet so was a bit whacked out, but it was worth it. I then slowly weaned myself off it as i started feeling better. It's not an addictive sleeping tablet.

It's an over the counter medicine. Mother safe recommended it to me.

I'm on 4mg zofran in the morning and again mid afternoon.
The headaches and light sensitivity I got before starting the zofran and really taking it super easy (I was trying to push through it, until that no longer was an option). I think it could be tiredness related? Can you rest more (Ha ha. I know it can be hard).

Also, I've starting eating all bran twice a day (lukcily I can stomach it if I eat it while watching TV to distract myself)- fibre tablets didn't do anything for me, but allbran has me back to once per day (TMI!)

DG sorry to hear you are feeling so sick, I can't help with the Zofran but on the constipation issue Metamucil can have opposite effect if you get dehydrated, something I found out the hard way.

I suffer terribly during pregnancy and the pharmacist recommended Lac-Dol which I've been taking on and off since 6 weeks and it works relatively quickly. It's a liquid which you can mix in juice or water to mask taste.

It might be a long shot but I've been vomiting 4-5 times a day and tried maxalon which did nothing. I tried Zofran and it helped with the vomiting but not the nausea. I ran out of zofran and in the meantime I got some Herbs of Gold Morning Sickness relief from the health food shop. It has a high dose of b6 which apparently sorts out blood sugars, chromium and ginger. It has worked wonders. I'm still vomiting in the mornings but not during the day and it eases the nausea during the day so that I can function. It's worth giving it a shot. I tried other herbal treatments with my DD and they did nothing but this is amazing stuff.
Good luck hun, the all day sickness is so horrendous!

Thankyou all for your suggestions. I will look into all those things. Yes, its truly awful but Im lucky that Im getting some relief during the morning. When pg with DS2 I had no relief whatsoever during the day or night, so this time its a bit easier, probably more like my first pg, but still pretty hard as well. I hope these suggestions will allow me to feel better all day so I can actually start mothering my boys again!

As I suspected, I am probably more dehydrated than I thought. I guess (TMI again) the thick coffee coloured urine should have been a give away. But hey, at least I can drink some water in this pg, so I wasnt so concerned.

LilyDust - I think it probably borders on HG, but there are so many people that have it worse (especially you) that I cant bring myself to use the term, even though I am quite ill.

Oh sweetheart!!! dont you ever think that what you are feeling or suffering is any less because someone else had it 'differently' to you!!! Honestly, DD is 2.5 and Im only learning now how severe mine was and I'd hate to think you feel guilty saying you feel awful cause of me. Maybe get some IV fluids into you and you might not feel so nauseous and the headaches might ease off?? hun, I hope it goes away soon xxx

If you haven't been already perhaps try some hydralyte or gastrolyte for rehydration. My Dr recommended the hydralyte ice blocks as they are much less likely to come back up than the liquid or water.

Re the IV fluids, my GP said that they can easily do that at the Drs office (no hospital admission) so perhaps consider that to help you rehydrate a bit.

Sagres & Bloom, I'll try the Hydralite this morning. If that doesnt work I'll go in for some IVs tomorrow.

Lily -You are so kind. Thanks for letting me vent. I just didnt want to cause offense to those (including yourself) who have suffered so much worse and I would never want to make light of the awful disease that is HG, especially the severe form. I do realise Im able to vent as I feel so awful and sick and thanks for sharing with me that its ok to do so.

I was pretty sick with DD3 & Zofran did nothing for me, I was admitted the hospital & given I.V fluids & anti nausea medication through the drip.
After that the Zofran actually worked & it was much more manageable.
My Ob said sometimes you need to break the cycle & get yourself rehydrated to get the medication to work.
