Okay so I just had my 20wk scan and found out I am having a girl Everything looks great but the technician drops on me that the baby's bladder is slightly enlarged for normal values.. It is 4.5mm and apparently 4mm or over is considered large and would need another scan at 30something mark to re-check
I have tried to do research on this (thinking I will find out this is really common) but the only thing I am finding is a condition called Lower Urinary Tract Obstruction which is very serious and potentially fatal as the bladder cannot empty and starts compromising other organs and draining the amnio fluid..
So now I am officially FREAKING OUT! I will not see my Obstetrician till Monday and I concede that the info I am seeing is probably worse case scenarios but I am finding it hard to find 'anything' on it being normal or common - just lots of stories of people who had babies with this that didn't resolve and losing their child
I call to the mummies to please, please advise if you have any experience of this or expert advice!
The worst thing you can ever do is google something. Try not to stress until you have your appointment and can discuss this with the dr. I know it's hard to keep calm. I'm sending lots of positive, relaxing vibes. I hope everything turns out fine for you and baby.
I personally think they wouldn't just let you go to wait 10 weeks to re-check on something potentially fatal. My friend's nephew died of that condition you mentioned and they were draining the baby's bladder all throughout the pregnancy. He also had other complications so not just that. Of course, ask your doctor about it if you're really worried. Ultrasounds are not completely accurate ways of measuring size anyway. I hope this makes you feel better.
Ok so please don't quote me but i thought that i would google it as well OK OK SHOOT ME NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUT............
When i was reading everything about being fatal the babies had other things wrong in the scan like enlarged kidneys!!!
In another thread a lady had a similar post to you and her sonographer said to her that the baby could just be holding off from doing a wee or just about ready to do a wee!!!
So please stop stressing take it as it comes, and i too am just as bad and google EVERYTHING!!!
Just as Lovemykids said, there is the possibility that bub was just ready to do a wee When I had my 20 week scan with my first he had an enlarged bladder, but I was told to go away for half an hour & when they rescanned his bladder was normal size, so he it was just full & he was ready to wee. I imagine I would have been a basket case after 10 weeks, just that half an hour was enough to have me stressing out.
