Does diet affect the glucose test?

I have my referral for the glucose test and I have to get it done either tomorrow or the following tuesday as they are the two times when DH can take the girls for me.

So Im sitting here this afternoon wondering if I should go in tomorrow and get it over and done with, or give myself a week to make sure my diet is awesome.

So Im wondering does your diet affect your glucose tests or not??

I remember with DD2 I had gastro for 2 or 3 days prior to the test and had only consumed lemonade for those days. When i told the midwife she did mention something about the test would be high because of the sugar in my system, but then my results were quite low, so much so that they were surprised about it.

I wondered this too when I got mine done. My diet has been terrible with this pregnancy, I've been craving (and giving into!) all sorts of bad things and was worried about my result. But all was good thankfully

Sorry I'm not very helpful am I!

Thanks CM, I like hearing that you had no problems!!

My diet is pretty good, but considering today my diet has been pretty bad, and its finishing off with homemade pizza's and more than likely chocolate (the stress easing kind) to finish off the night. But then Im thinking my weetbix with brown sugar for breakfast before I go in there wont help either. All this thinking is stressing me out, darn it

It can affect it but only if you eat a chocolate bar or something just before they test your blood. This is what they told me when they did mine.

Otherwise long term diet I don't think has a massive affect on it.

I was pretty keen to pass the GT test as a positive result would have got me kicked out of the birth cente. So I ate scrambled eggs for breakfast on the morning of the test and also went for a brisk walk. And I was clear both times despite having a number of risk factors for GD! Coincidence or not, I'll be doing the same next time.

No ones told me too HotI... they didnt for DD2 and they havent this time round either. But I cant remember what they told me for DD1.

I had planned on avoiding it, but considering the hospital seems to be having with you if you dont have it, thought it best to succumb to their requirements.

    There's conflicting info.
When I had DD some path places made you follow a special diet for the 3 days preceding the initial test. Some didn't.
I've failed the initial test twice and therefore had to do the long test twice and one place made me follow the diet, one didn't.
The diet is high carb but low simple sugar.

Are u doing the hour or two hour test?
the 2 hour test u have to fast but i dont think u have to for the hour one.
Your diet shoudltn affect your results, and in reality why would u bend it? u need to make sure your body is producing enough insulin for your normal daily diet. Seems silly to me that you'd avoid sweet foods that you'd normally eat

Yeah 1 hour test is no fast, the 2 hours test is the fasting over night from dinner time. That one is the worst!

    Its the one hour one.

I dont have much sweet stuff in my diet because its makes me really sick. But today has been a shocker, especially for me at the moment. I suppose Im looking at it from the other way round, I dont nomally have the sweets, but have today and a little over the weekend. So Im trying to work out if I am better off waiting til next week when I havent had a bender.

my OB told me to fast just so to make sure nothing i had eaten in the morning could affect the outcome of the test. I did it about 8am in the morning. I tried to be a bit more careful leading up to the test, but a lady i work with did mention that shouldn't i eat normally so i got a correct reading to how my body is handling my 'normal' pregnancy diet? lol a good point, but no one wants to have to go back for the 2nd glucose test! lol

Yeah I had lunch before mine and it came back borderline so had to have the second test, completly fine after the second one though but it was awful :\ 3 blood tests over 2 hours and 2 doses of the glucose drink on an empty stomach. It was a challange not to just throw up !

I just rang up and enquired for mine which I need to have in 2 weeks.

Mine is the hour test 75g load.

I was advised not to fast prior to the test and to have a substantial meal 1hour before going in for the test. And then to sit still for the hour and then come in for bt and drink.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks Lys!!

I went in this morning whilst DH had the girls, drank my drink, and sat for an hr and read my book in peace. if I didnt feel so horrid after the drink, and didnt have to get the bloods done, I was thinking I would do it again just to get the hr's peace and quiet and space to read my book. I was in absolute heaven!!

I did ask whether diet affects the test and the lady couldnt give me an answer.

I didn't know I was having the test the day I went in, I was eating a chocolate bar on the way! Thankfully, a normal result.
