    Question Exposed to whooping cough

My boss has just informed me that he has tested positive for whooping cough, he's had it for about 4 or 5 weeks but has only just been diagnosed.

It appears that one of my colleagues (who I sit next to) may also have it, she's off to the doctors this afternoon to be tested.

I'm just wondering if I or bubs are at any more risk than a non pregnant person? Is this something I should be making my midwife aware of?

I'm really not sure if there's anything I should be doing now I know I've been exposed and in quite close contact with these people?

Give your primary carer a call, it can have risks for you, specially with 2 people close to you with the illness. Your boss is a good man for telling you very soon after the diagnosis.

Yes I would tell them asap also you need to be tested via blood test or swab. This went through my office when I was 10 weeks pregnant with my first child, I ended up being postive with it also and ended up having to work from home for 4 weeks. 2 weeks of that I was contagious but the last two weeks I was so sick I couldnt hardly move. Please please get tested as its highly possible you are positive with it, no one next to me in the office had it but someone on the other floor had it and thats how I got it.

    Thanks ladies.

I just rang my midwife and I have to have a blood test to check my antibodies and also need to start a course of anti-biotics as a precaution.

Hi Jaycee, my hubby was diagnosed with whooping cough when I was 16 weeks - we think he got it from one of the foreign workers at his workplace as they don't get blood tests before arriving in Australia to check for those things and a new group had only started working there just under 2 months before - and his GP prescribed antibiotics for both me and our DS without even seeing us as a precaution.

From what I was told and what I researched at the time only a real concern if you are close to term as bub doesn't get any protection from any whooping cough immunisations you have, and it can be deadly for a new born.

Apparently it doesn't cause any developmental problems.

It was a 2 week course of antibiotics for me and DS, and everything is fine now.

Hope that helped a bit I know I panicked majorly when hubby told me he had it lol
