There has always been two thoughts on this. My understanding is that;
One is that it impacts on you - that is where you are squashing the Inferior Vena Carva (blood vessel) that supplies blood to your organs and therefore you will get dizzy etc and know to move. THat is more likely if you lay on your right side.
The other thought is that the weight of the baby squashes the Aorta if you lay on your back and that supplies the baby with blood. You wont feel any different appart from baby may start jumping - to say "hey that sucks".
I dont lay on my back after 20 weeks. IF you really need too then you can prop a pillow under your right buttock to tilt your back and uterus. I will do this for a couple of minutes if my back is really sore.
i actually found out that it will stop blood flow and make you pass out - it happened to me. so they say about 38-30 weeks stop layign flat on your back.
