    Glucose Test

I am seeing a midwife for all my appointments through my pregnancy.
She has given me a form to get the glucose test in the next couple of weeks.
You know the one where you drink the sugary stuff and sit around for an hour til they take your blood???
Firstly, I work full time! I don't know when I'm supposed to find the time to sit around the hospital.
Secondly, I just happened to mention I was due for the test to my doctor yesterday. He said "what on earth for?????"
He told me I am not at risk, so he's thinks it's unnecessary.
I already have a hard enough time going to the appts. I HATE them!!!! I don't want to go if I dont have to.

    What should I do????

Anyone else NOT had the test done?

Lots of people don't have it and lots of carers don't order it these days.
I chose not to have as I was low risk. My mw offered it to me but didn't thinknits was necessary.

    No tests are compulsory.

For some reason my reply didn't pop up here!

In short, I did have the test, but if you and your doctor don't consider the risks of GD are large for you, then don't do it.

However, if you do want to go ahead with it, I did the following:

    - midwife dropped the drink off to me at my place, earlier on
    - I drank the drink 1 hour before the appointment at home
    - made the appointment for early in the morning, so they wouldn't be running late
    - popped in, had the blood test, and all within 10 minutes of the appointment time

Wonderful. I wasn't given a choice, and that was before they even checked my weight. Obviously I look fatter than I think I do

It's not always about "looking fat" and other risk factors are taken into account. I have severe PCOS, but not overweight and only gained 10kg through my entire pregnancy. At 17 weeks I was sent for my first 2 hour fasting glucose tolerance test. I then had to do another two hour glucose tolerance test at the time most pregnant women just do the non-fasting one hour glucose challenge test. At that stage my baby was still measuring on the smaller side of things as well.

My midwife gave me the drink to take home to drink an hour b4 as well. Sooooo much easier. (I am not fat)

It came up fine. Then because I have a thyroid problem (they were worried bubs was too small) I had an ultrasound of bubs on Friday (33 weeks) and he is measuring as a 37 week old!!! They estimate him as almost 6.5 pound already and I still have weeks to go!! And my tummy is measuring normal as well so the doc is a bit confused.

Apparently the 1st glucose test can be up to 15% wrong anyway and I had the 2 hour one today just to make sure coz bubs is so big... :-(

I think it is just routine that they try to get everyone to do. All my friends have done it. I'm kinda glad about having the 2nd test coz if I do have it and bubs just keeps getting bigger, I still have a chance to control it or have other options like CS if I really have to... but also if I do have it and the 1st test didn't pick it up - what a waste of time that 1st test was!

I had the test with my first two babies, then moved to Scotland for my 3rd where the midwives were appalled I was given such a horrible test with no risk factors. If you are comfortable saying no, then that is what you should do. Remember, all tests are optional.

Bont.nt - please remember scans at your gestation are notoriously inaccurate for determining estimated weight. Palpations are much more accurate at your stage.

When I was working, I ran up to the place in the morning, quickly drank the drink (they only give you 5 minutes to drink it anyway) ran back to work, waited the hour, dashed back and gave blood. So it wasn't too difficult to get out of work, just took about half an hour all up - and I just worked through half my lunch break instead.

I am at risk I suppose because i'm overweight, but I was basically a "normal" weight for my first two pregnancies and still had the test because sometimes people can get it that aren't at risk, and I would rather know than not know

I have had the test in both my pregs now - but as I have a larger BMI I have to have the 2 hr test! It goes fast and isn't that bad! I fell asleep on their couch at the last one!!
If you don't want it then don't do it- they can't make you!

Wow really? My BMI would be very high but I've only ever had to do the 1hr test.

Teni I wasn't given a choice either and I don't think my BMI (or weight??) is very high? Maybe some places just do it as routine... I didn't know I could say no... silly maybe, but I just did it!

Kts64: overweight people can be at a higher risk but there is no real definite risk factors... It can happen to anyone!!

PCOS and having a previous baby that was on the larger side of things seem to be on the list.

PCOS and having a previous baby that was on the larger side of things seem to be on the list.
DD1 was 3.95kg and my OB said when I was pregnant with DD2 that I was probably going to be diagnosed with GD because she was so close to 4kg - and I'm a large girl.

But so far (3 pregnancies) my blood sugars have been fine, if anything, a little low.

I'm getting the test on Monday to find out in this pregnancy though, so now that I've said that I'll probably test high.. lol
