I always thought I would have children but it wasn't until first friends did that I really thought about it, when I say really thought about it - I mean I arbitrarily decided I wanted to have had first by 32, I had DD a month before turning 32, but that was chance really. I didnt really get the urge till we moved to Australia (when I was 30) and after that was just circumstance (job not going anywhere, friends having children - it seemed like a good time to see what would happen. Number 2, I was 34, a 2 year gap not 3 as had always thought, due again to thinking 2 would be better work wise. I had never thought about how many wanted before number 1 but after knew only wanted 2. I am a younger one in my mothers group, and in friends in general.
Now I tend to think that being older is not so great from a career perspective, but then I wasn't interested when younger, so I agree about "just working with the way your life goes". If my children asked advice, I would say go for it when it feels right and let everything else work itself out.
