low amniotic fluid

has anyone had low amniotic fluid discovered at their 19wk ultrasound?? if so what happened with your pregnancy, baby etc?? My value was 6.2cm so classed as being on the lower limit. Have googled but most of the information I can find is third trimester related or just says there is a high chance of miscarriage. Any further information would be appreciated

Hi jaspen,

A daughter of a freind of mine was only just in her third trimester when the majority of her amniotic fluid leaked out. I know she spent a little time in hospital, and their only concern was that she would have what is called a "dry labour" which was quite painfull, but bubs was ok. She had a little boy who is perfectly fine.

I dont know if its the same thing or not, or even what caused it to happen to her, but i thought it might help to know that her baby was ok with little to no amniotic fluid.

I am sure your Dr will let you know if anything needs to be done or if you are at risk of anything. have you had your appt with the dr to discuss the results f the u/s? When you do, just make sure you address it and ask if there is anthing you need to be aware of or do.

Try not to stress too much, i know i got myslef in a tizzy when i read the report of my first u/s at 8 weeks which said i had a lutus something-or-other on my left ovary.. i panicked thinking all sorts of things were wrong with me and my ovaries, until i found out it just meant an egg had been released from that ovary... which was now my baby!! LOL It would have been a bad thing if i didnt have it!! LOL Not to say there is nothing going on with you- but wait and see what your Dr says, and if they arnt worried, then it should be ok.

Thanks Starbright - I have my appt on Wednesday so not long too wait. Thanks for the story on your friend - I don't know that mine is low as a result of a leak for me at this stage, or not that I have noticed anyway so..... will definititely be discussing it on Wednesday.

ETA am getting quite scared now cause everything I can find on low fluid at 19wks equals major birth defects at best, loss at worst

Hi Jaspen,

I was in exactly the same situation as you with DD's pregnancy. We we told at my 20 week ultrasound that my fluid was at the "low end of normal" and that meant it was hard to get a good ultrasound picture.

Like you, I was completely freaked out by it all, particularly as it was an IVF pregnancy and I had already lost one previous baby to miscarriage. Noone seemed to be able to give me any info and all that I googled seemed to be very bad news. DH kept saying not to worry, because although my fluid was in the low end of normal it was still in the normal range, even if only just.

My OB had me take monthly scans after that, just to make sure it wasn't the result of a leak or anything like that. It staying constant, without decreasing any further, up until my 32 week scan, which revealed that the problem had mysteriously resolved itself and my fluid had increased again to acceptable levels.

My birth was normal and there has never been a healthier baby than DD.

So, after all that worry, the only downside of the whole thing was that I couldn't get a 3D ultrasound because without fluid to contrast the baby with, the picture doesn't turn out!!!

I know it's hard, but try not to worry too much and I'm sure everything is going to be just fine for you.

Thank you so much for that Brownbug - that gives me some hope. Have just spoken with the Drs receptionist who was able to tell me Dr had read the report and hadn't left any messages or comments so discuss it tomorrow so obviously he isn't too freaked (although I also realise they can't do much at this stage except monitor which since only a week since last u/s wouldn't be worth doing another yet anyway).

Brownbug were you told you needed extra rest or anything??

i wouldnt stress too much ... dr's can inject a saline ****ion to mimic the waters ... so bubs can function normally ....

Hi Jaspen,

No, they told me there was nothing to be done except to monitor the situation. I can't remember my numbers, but as mine were still in the normal range, the baby was not at risk unless the levels deteriorated further. Hopefully you are in the same position and things will just naturally improve.

Like your OB, mine didn't seem all that concerned either, so perhaps it isn't as uncommon as we might think.

Every time I felt a bit damp down there I had an absolute freak out, because I had read all the stories on here about premature rupture of the membrane etc, but of course increased dampness is just an ordinary symptom as pregnancy progresses and was nothing at all to worry about. When my waters eventually broke normally at 38 weeks I definitely knew about it !

Don't worry hun. Your aminotic may be at the lower end but it is still within the hormal range.
Your body and your baby produce amniotic fluid all the time so I would expect that within the next few weeks your fluid level has increased

as you anticipated the OB was quite relaxed explaining that it was still in the normal range so although low still considered normal and he checked it on his machine and wwas happy with the volume so reassured me not to panic and that he'd be checking it every appt anyway so no panic required.

All in all - all is good.

fter reading all the posts i feel so much better myself... I was told at my 19 week scan thati had low fluid but the sonographer wasnt overly concerned and told me to see my GP... He was like its fine we'll check it later on...

Went for a $d scan only to find that fluid was still low and the pics werent the best... (as mentioned they need fluid around bubs for the contrast or something)

I Have just gone back to my GP who is sending me for a scan to check bubs size, fluid levels etc... I was told that fluid can replenish itself and the same that monitoring will be constant throu till the end...

Fingers crossed my scan goes well on wednesday....

All the best for Wednesday and from everything I read (which I don't recommmend cause it was way overwhelming and in places unnecessarily scary) given you are so close to the end there are things they cann do if your fluid levels continue to drop and hold you out for long enough to safely deliver bubs.
