OB concerned about me not gaining weight - why?

So my last pregnancy I gained 11kgs the whole pregnancy after losing 5kg in the first 20wks due to bad morning sickness. My last OBGYN was happy with that, bubs was fine etc etc.

I have a new OBGYN now and he is concerned that I have lost 2kgs up til this point instead of gained and wants me to have gained a kg by my next appointment. I dont know how Im supposed to do that when Im already eating like a pig (and not always completely healthy either ). I had bad m/s up until 13wks and its coming back a bit now but not to the extent of last pregnancy. He wants me to be 72kgs by term (38wks).

Why is he so concerned about 2kgs of weight loss in 17wks when baby is growing fine and Im eating? Its starting to annoy and worry me a bit.

Personally, I would think that if the baby is fine then you've got nothing to worry about. My OB didn't weigh me once during my whole pregnancy, so he wouldn't have known if I'd lost, gained, or stayed the same, but he did regularly assess bubs' health which is the important thing.

Considering you've had m/s up until now, and you only gained 11kg with Jett, I have no idea why he'd be worrying. Like you said, the baby is growing fine. I wouldn't worry about it, you can only eat so much!

I'm not sure about limits on weight gain. But it seems pretty obvious to me that if you have been sick then you won't have gained weight. I only gained a total of 8 kg with my DS and my OB didn't say there was any issue. He was perfectly fine, born at 42 weeks and weighed 6lb11. I was actually back to me pre-preg weight before I left hospital! I don't starve myself, I eat healthily, with lots of fruit, try not to eat too much fatty stuff, it's just the way I'm made. Try not to worry, as long as you are eating well and having regular healthy meals including all the food groups I feel you are doing just fine!

I can't see any prob either, if the baby is fine & is growing then all is well. I only put on 6kgs the entire pregnancy, I even lost weight in the last couple months due to not being able to keep any food down. Told the doc this each app & he didn't seemed to fussed, just gave me some tablets to see if they would help (they didn't) and that was it. Bubs was still a healthy 6pds 12ozs. Like everyone else has said, if your eating healthy & bubs is growing then all should be fine.

I don't think he should be worried...I didn't gain a gram with either of my pregnancies until about 20 weeks and both my kids were around the 8lb mark
I only gained 12kg with first bub and 9kg with the second yet they were healthy sized babies.
My OB never weighed me either, alot of them don't these days. As long as you feel ok and baby is growing it's all good.

I have no idea why your ob would be worried. If you are eating well and drinking there shouldnt be a problem. I know of some obs that never weigh woman. For my first I was never weighed, not once. I put on 30 kg so the second time I requested to be weighed so I knew it would make me watch what I ate more carefully. I didnt put on any weight with the second until about 20 weeks.

As the other lovely ladies said - I wouldnt worry either, as long as bub is fine and you are eating relatively well and drinking lots of water etc you will be fine. I got weighed at my first 6 week appointment and was then never weighed again! I put on 15kgs all up majority of which was chocolate Im sure! Good luck!

my ob doesnt weigh me ever, she says it just makes women obsess that they are too big or too small - and the important things are the health and size of baby and my health so as long as all the scans, blood tests etc are ok she is happy... so pls dont worry about it. If your OB is getting obsessive about the 1kg etc maybe ask for a good explanation as every woman's body is diff and this is an unecessary stress for you to factor in... s/he should be there to reduce your stress not add to it and giving you a 'target' to put on weight may just make you unhealthy.... best of luck!

Seems so strange to me. Both pregnancies I lost 7kg in the first trimester due to illness, in the end I would have gained 5kg for the entire pregnancy beginning to end with Jovie (but really 12kg with the weight loss in the first tri) so it seems odd to me. At my hospital the second pregnancy they never weighed me. I only watched my weight myself.

Anna, I put on about 15kgs with pg 1 and way less than that with pg 2 (and I was lighter going in second time around too). My ob weighed me at each visit and I asked her was she concerned that I wasn't putting on weight to which she always replied no.

Perhaps you could ask him what his specific concern is, and explain your history with your first pg and the fact that you are eating plenty. Then you might have some idea of his reasons and can discuss it with him further. Personally I think I'd ask not to be weighed any more as it's causing you more stress than anything. You are the patient, surely you could ask him to use other methods to determine if everything is ok. Or you could just put a lead weight in your pocket at your next visit
