It's called a pregnancy management fee and basically it is to offset the ridiculously high liability insurance that OB's have to have.
You don't really "get" anything for it unfortunately but you can claim some of it back through Medicare. When I paid mine I had reached my medicare threshold so out of the $2200 we had to pay I got $1800 of it back. So that took some of the sting out at least
No, you don't get anything extra at that visit, it's not relevant to the appointment. Most Obs structure their fees this way to maximise the amount you get back from Medicare (about 80%). We should think ourselves lucky, the rebate only came in about two years ago! You used to have to pay the whole lot yourself :eek:
Mine is due next week, but my lovely OB and his receptionist are very relaxed about accounts. Still going to pay it though, don't want $2,100 hanging over my head much longer!
