im thinking of seeing an osteopath who can help with pelvic floor muscles, but what actually do osteopaths do? how would they help me?
silly question i know! :redfcae:
Osteopathic treatment can help the functioning of the pelvic floor in a number of ways. Treating any mechanical strains through the hips, pelvis and lower back will help to balance out the tension in the pelvic floor muscles, aiding there optimal function. Pelvic floor exercises can be given or reviewed to make sure they are being performed correctly. In pregnant woman, treatment may be aimed to ensure that the pelvic floor is supple, elastic and as fit as possible in the preparation for birth. Previous episiotomy scars can also benefit from treatment, making them more elastic and able to function better for subsquent births.
In terms of the actual treatment techniques used, these will vary between osteopaths, but may include soft tissue massage and stretching of the surrounding structures, position release techiques, techniques directly to the pelvic / abdominal organs, manipulation to the spine (including the spinal areas that provide the nerve supply to the pelvic floor and organs), pelvic floor release ( done externally contacting the pelvic floor through towel and underwear), craniosacral techniques and more!
Feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions about whether osteopathic treatment can help you!
