Hi Kate
Lots of different things work for lots of different people. For me, I found peppermint tea really helpful to settle things down, and also frequent simple meals (dry toast, crackers, clear soup - I'm a chicken noodle fan!) Try eating something as soon as you wake up....I found that if I left eating until after my morning shower, the M/S would hit me really bad.
I didn't try any other remedies but I know there are natural things you can buy at the chemist to help calm things down. I'm sure others will let you know.
grated ginger - grate a tbspn up and put it in a thermos of boilding water - sip on it during the day - but try not to drink a lot at once as it could make you feel ill
potato soup - make a batch of plain potato soup - again to sip on during the day - something to do with the starch
you could try the seasickness bracelets you can buy at the chemists - acupressure based therapy
get a lemon and the pointy end??! - rub that into the point in your wrists hourly for a couple of minutes each side
anyway - i tried all of it LOL - but acupuncture was still the only thing that really helped me out - the potato soup though was good because you never really got overly hungry - which is good for monring sickness
good luck
gosh i miss being preg ever again, but will not miss that feeling .... bleh ....
I had severe morning sickness ... nothing seemed to help except strangely enough i felt better when i ate an orange for dinner, LOL ... For breakfast i forced myself to eat two weetbixs for the baby's sake ... and sipped lemonade (could only stomach the Kirk brand from Coles) but limited it as need to be very careful of the teeth as don't want cavities or plaque build up ... and funny enough on the rare occasion i liked to chew on the 'All Natural Confectionary' lollies Blinky Bill one's but i would only eat the Lemon flavoured ones out of the pkt. As for the Rennie tablets they lived in my handbag but i think it was more mind over matter if they actually worked for me.
I tried everything Ginger but nothing helped ... Also tried Blackmores Morning Sickness tabs but didn't worked for me.
A friend suggested carrying some dry crackers in the handbag when out which did save me a couple of time !!
I found when i got to about 8 weeks into the pregnancy i felt better & by 12weeks i was heaps better ... but morning sickness came back mildly in the last 2weeks of the pregnancy but it was fine to handle as was nothing as bad as beginning.
I found that sipping on lemon and ginger tea helped somewhat, as did sucking on crystalised ginger. Vitamin B6 is another common recommendation.
Most important for me was to eat smaller amounts regularly - never letting your stomach get close to empty as this causes your blood sugar levels to drop and exacerbates the nausea.
My Naturopath recommended regular protein snacks to me, in order to stabilise blood sugar levels. ie:
- Miso soup - which I found to be an absolute godsend. Great way to keep your fluids up too. You can buy sachets of miso paste from the health food store (don't buy the ones from the supermarket coz they are full of nasty additives etc). Just add boiling water.
- Hard boiled eggs
- Hommus & crackers/ryvitas
- Melrose's Almond, Brazil & Cashew nut spread (health food section of Woolies) on toast. Or a handful of mixed unsalted nuts (not peanuts).
- Lean chicken (ie - chicken, cheese and avocado sandwiches).
- Natural Yogurt (the sourness is good for the nausea too!)
She also recommend I stay away from any sugary foods or white flour products (white bread, pasta, rice etc) as they are high GI - raising blood sugar levels quickly, only to drop them down fast too. So wholemeal bread, pasta, rice etc is the go to maintain stable blood sugar...
I found that having a protein snack directly before going to bed (ie- an egg on wholemeal toast at 10pm) made a significant difference to the nausea in the morning. This also stopped me from having to get up around 4am to eat. So, helps with the sleeping too!!
