I think the feeling of yummy happy tummy-ness feels better than the crying, whinging misery of craving something and making yourself not eat it! :-D

I was always told that ALL deli meats were no-go zones, but I am not sure if anyone really knows the proper sicentific facts of listeria risks these days....it seems to get weirder and more involved all the time!

Had half a glass of wine when I was visiting Mum and Dad a few weekends ago... weirdly, really, because I rarely drink when I'm NOT pregnant. I'm not that fond of ham, but I've had such cravings for bacon. OMG.

I figure that we generally have pretty good hygiene standards here, and listeria outbreaks are very rare. It's pretty unlikely to get a contamination. Plus, I think of health being a holistic thing - mental health in pregnancy counts too!! If you're going crazy with food deprivation (and let's face it, there are so many other deprivations you have to put up with!) then it's not good for the baby. Or that's what I'm telling myself.

Gosh, if I followed all of the 'rules' of eating wehn pg, then I would starve!! I eat deli meats, cold, cooked what ever, as long as it's fresh and from somewhere I have eaten from regularly and know is fresh. I also ate soft boiled eggs when pg with DD. I had terrible cravings for it! This pg it's ham and tomato sandwiches. And beer, but I have only indulged a few times in that one, and only light beer. I'm not usually a beer drinker though! I have eaten bbq chicken from the shops, take away, kebabs and cold fresh salads. I am as sensible as I can be about eating high risk foods, heat things like take aways and bbq chicken. But I just can't restrict my diet like that. It is getting a bit ridiculous to me now, with what is restricted for pregnant women to eat!!

I am absolutely craving it too!!! I gave into my craving at 14 weeks and had a couple of rolls (not raw fish ones tho) and ended up at the emerg dep that night with a bleed. Im positive eating sushi had nothing to do with it.. i think it was just the universe telling me to watch it!! Made me super paranoid tho!!

Actually that's not really true about us being safe here in Australia. A big wellknown Australian made smallgoods company had a bad contamination scare a few years ago.

Yep and also with regards to the cheeses it's not necessarily how it's made but how it's stored after it leaves the factory. So whilst they may test fine in the factory during travel may not be as stringent or the recipient of the goods may not store correctly etc.

Some great advice in this thread. Loving your work girls.

PZ yep it is mostly the rice, I know a girl who used to go to her local and request her sushi was made with fresh rice, so the owner/chef would let her know when he was making a new batch of rice and do it that way.

I remember being told by my GP if you're unsure don't do it. If you can't trust an establishment because you don't know them or they don't look clean then don't eat there. Don't eat out of bain-marie's, buffets or at someone's house if the food has been left out.

TBH I think a lot of what is recommended is a lot like Bath says common sense, and if you've done any kind of food handling course you'll know that this is how we should all act around food, pregnant or not.

I dont do the cold meats (only ham in a toasty) or soft cheeses BUT I have had a tub of Taziki (sp?) dip with carrott sticks and I have also eaten my fair share of Maccas lettuce! I also have a glass of Iced Coffee Ice break milk evey morning - I feel off all day if I dont (had to have the same with DD too) and I will have a glass of coke with tea most nights!

I eat ham....but I usually have it on a toasted sandwich. I think in Australia, we are pretty safe from listeria. Our meat is very fresh and the supermarkets store it really well. Just make sure you eat it fresh and not slices that have been in the fridge for a week
