Hi everyone. My concern and question is this. I am aware that a sustained high temperature during pregnancy can cause some degree of brain damage, thus the reason you can not use electric blankets etc. If I am correct in this my concern is 1. If you have too many blankets on at night (and sleep like the dead like I do and not wake up to take them off), can this raise your temperature significantly enough to cause damage? If you are really overheated?
I am quiet panicked because of this as I also had the flu at about week 8 and am concerned that I may have had a temperature then and possibly something may have gone wrong.
I just had my 13 week ultrasound but obviously although things appear ok, you can't look into the brain.
Does anyone know of any information or personal experience that they can give me some peace of mind?
I am pretty sure you would be fine with the blankets etc - as long as you dont wake up boiling hot (in which case I guess you would kick off a blanket or 2)??
Re the flu I know lots of ppl who have had it in preg and been ok, I am pretty sure you dont have to worry but maybe check with your GP or someone else on here may know more about it than I do.. I have been lucky and avoided any nasties during preg so not looked into it too deeply.
If your 13 wk scan was good I would tend not to worry myself about it, there are too many things to worry about in preg!
Hope you have a healthy rest of your pregnancy and welcome to the 2nd trimester!
Nell as a rule of thumb if it's too uncomfortable for you then so it is for your baby. If you are sleeping thru and not being woken due to being hot I think you can rest easy that your little one is just fine.
It is a sustained temperature that we need to worry about - if something really affects your baby in the first trimester usually the pregnancy doesn't continue.
I understand completely your fears but I really believe that you can push them aside and feel quite confident that all is well...
I just had a bad infection a couple of weeks ago and had a forty degree temp for nearly 36 hours. My bubs heart rate was up high but that is because mine was too. According to my midwife and the midwives at the hospital they actually cope really well when we are sick. I am sure there have been heaps of women who have gotten the flu etc when pregnant and I would think it would have to be an extreme temp for a long time to cause damage.
