    Question Dry Nipples!!!

    Hi Ladies,

Was just wondering is it normal for your nipple/areola area to dry out this early on in pregnancy? I am just over 18 weeks and I have noticed this has happened over the last week or so but they are not sore. They have definately gotten bigger and darker as well which I know is normal but the dryness, I am not sure. I have some Bepanthen cream and I was wondering is that the best thing to put on them to try to fix the problem. I would be glad of any help.

    Thanks so much,
    xxx Nita

    Hi Neatisme,

I had a similar problem and found Lansinoh (sp) was the best solution... its a bit greasy but it definately did the trick for me!

    Hey Nita

things that can help dry nipples...
avoid hot water in the shower...as this washes off the natural skin oils
avoid any soaps...as this dries the skin

you may have also noticed some little pimples on your areola? these are special little 'glands' called montgomery's tubercules (nice name huh!) and they actually secrete a very small amount of 'oil' to help keep the areola and nipple in top condition

Lasinoh is great...and alot of BF mums find it really helpful to promote healing and comfort in the early days of BF

avoid applying any creams that are mineral oil based...as they clog the pores

My mother makes a beeswax, olive oil, propolis, honey-based cream that she sells at local markets and I used it during and after my first pregnancy - it has a multitude of uses and it was just brilliant in conditioning and protecting my nipples. If you'd like her contact details, please PM me. She can post a container to you. It's quite cheap and lasts for ages. I even used it for a bum cream for DS, as well as lip balm for me among other uses.

my mum told me to get some Wool Fat, you can get it from the chemist, and its fantastic, it cleared up my no nipples no problems, and DH now uses it on his dry lips. my mum said they used to get told to use wool fat every day for months before the baby is due as its supposed to help make the nipples supple. the lady at the chemist also said the same thing.

I am on Lanisoh and got it from the chemist, it's great as mine are a bit dry. It's $17.50 for a medium sized tube, there is a much smaller one you can get. I don't think it's too pricey though, that's pretty good I think, you only have to use a little bit!

I had dry, itchy nipples almost my whole pg, and Lansinoh definitely did the trick for me! I continued to use it for the first month or so after having DS too, and never had anything like cracked nipples
