    Odema at 22 wks

    Hello,

I think my feet are begining to swell up a bit. I had very bad odema with DD1 but that wasn't until week 35 and nothing with DD2. What week can odema start? Is this a bit early?

Mine started to swell a little a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure if its a bit early or not...
I find mine swell if I am sitting or standing for long periods. I suppose the advice to us would be to avoid that, and to drink heaps of water.
I've got a Drs appt tomorrow - I was going to ask about it then!

Bek - I've always had it from about 18 weeks, lucky me! I'm already at the stage this time where it just doesn't completely go away overnight. My feet are always slightly swollen now and are quite sore most of the time.

I remember going to my GP when prg with DD because they were THAT bad at 17 weeks and I wasn't expecting it, same with DS at about 18 weeks - my ob told me that unless it's accompanied by high bp and/or protein in urine, it's nothing to worry about. A friend of mine wanted to take a photo when i was prg with DD, she was so shocked at how my feet blew up I told her no of course!

My sister was almost hospitalised with odema during her second prg, so I think it's probably a family thing with us

Try putting your feet up, elevated above your heart, that usually helps to relieve the discomfort.

Also, prop the end of your mattress up (I just put a pillow or two underneath) overnight while you sleep. This usually results in my feet almost returning to normal overnight.

You should have seen mine a few weeks ago when I was sitting at the computer studying every night, i was swollen up to my knees

Willow - My feet don't sound as bad as yours do..hugs I was on daily visits to the hospital for my odema with DD1 (in the last 2 weeks) and they were threatening hospitalisation, but I don't remember it starting until later. I think I first got it at 28wks but it was managable till 35wks.

Good idea re the mattress hon thanks

Oh yeah BH have started today too.

Oooh, I never get BH...kinda glad too!

They also say that with odema it's more of a worry if it's in the hands, face etc. Not so much the feet.

Hope they behave! It's so uncomfortable.

    Hi Bek,
I had oedema from very early on in my first pregnancy (I think, from memory, at the end of the first trimester)... Even my GP commented that it was very early.
I felt crummy - and MASSIVE
I was monitored for pre-eclampsia from about 24weeks (had high blood pressure as well)
Swollen feet and legs mainly - but in the last trimester even my face was swollen...
I had real trouble sleeping - and not sure if this will apply to you - but a friend of mine is a GP and she suggested 2 magnesium tablets a day (I'm sure there are heaps of good brands but she said to make sure it was magnesium-chelate - which is a specific type of magnesium (it's not a brand) - the person at the chemist/health food shop will know which one is which)...
Anyway, took about 5 days but it really did help - not so much with the swelling - but with the restless-legs and insomnia!
Anyway, PM me if you need to know anything else.
Take care and all the best for a wonderful pregnancy,
    Lily

Bek - have you had cooler weather lately where you are?
I have found my feet don't swell up every day now that the cooler weather has come.

    Thanks Ladies.

Lily - I actually started to take magnesium tabs last week because I was getting cramps. Thankfully both the odema and cramps have gone.

Snacks - Weather has not changed much here, well not enough to say it is cooler.
