Unhappy Please help! I'm freaking out - fetal seizures?

    Hi everyone,

I made a thread yesterday about hiccups, but now its different....

On Sunday night i felt these little jolts in my tummy, which at first were cute because i thought they were hiccups, but honestly now i'm freaking out and i feel different in my tummy, and i feel cramping and nauseas...

Normally our girl does normal movements, like kicks and wriggles etc, but now she does these jolts, and ONLY jolts. No kicks or any other types of movements. And they have been going for 2 days straight now, and it's every 5 minutes, and she'll do about 10 jolts in every "episode".

So after googling fetal hiccups, i read that it's possible the baby can be having seizures and you should go to get it check out ASAP, and when they're born, they have seizures throughout infancy too... maybe i'm over-reacting, but surely she can not have the hiccups for 2 days straight? I've been timing them, and they're 5 minutes apart, and roughly 10 jolts every time.

    Anyone at all had this?

if you are worried then contact your medical provider. If you are worried, the only way to find out is to get medical help. Also you stressing is not good for bubs, so ring and speak to them

Thanks Odette - i am stressing out and i've also just read somewhere that it can indicate the cord being around their neck or a kink in the cord....

Trust me, it is so easy to self diagnose on the internet and get yourself stressed and worried. I have worried myself sick by self diagnosing many a time.

Yesterday, it felt as though my bub was basically hiccuping non stop, I couldn't get over how many hiccups there were, but today it has calmed down heaps more.

I agree with Odette and Caro though, if you are worried, then give your ob/midwife a call. Don't feel like you are overreacting, it is normal to feel worried when something is different and hopefully they will be able to put your mind at ease

    I hope bub settles soon.

Oh big hugs my love... :hugs: I agree with Spring - the internet and Dr Google can be very very traumatic.

I advise that you see your obs and if you are still concerned ask for an u/s. This will show what is happening.

HOWEVER, as the other women have said those hiccups are monstrous sometimes. Remember this is how your baby learns to swallow, all that lovely amniotic fluid (and there is lots of it!). It can get quite aggressive. I remember them being so bad I couldn't sleep at times.

I am a big one on gut feelings. If you are feeling scared and worried demand to be seen so your fears can be allayed.

    Thinking of you...

Thankyou so much for all of your replies - they have eased my mind a lot... and i'm calling the hospital now to see what they say.

I hope she is just a hiccup-y baby, and i'm just over-reacting. Since posting, she has stopped for about 20 minutes.... the first time she's stopped in 2 days! I have an appointment tomorrow with the hospital anyway, and i'll ask then too. I also have my OB appointment on Thursday. He will probably be able to tell me more.

Thankyou again lovely ladies, i really appreciate your help

Hugs Keira, hope everything is fine. Emelia constantly had the hiccups when i was pregnant with her and then when she was born, everyday she would have the hiccups about 2-3 times a day!

if u are feeling really worried probably is best to go get checked out, big *hugs* let us know how u go.

Oh thankyou Amanda, Blanche and Delicate Dove

i hope it's just me being paranoid, and all that googling can make anyone over-react... i'll post tomorrow after i go to the hospital.... all i could find from googling was that they usually get the hiccups around 2-3 times a day.... today i've counted 36 "episodes" which is obviously excessive, and after posting she did a massive kick, so at least it was something different to jolts.

    When does the worrying stop!!!

    NEVER!!!!

    Hi Keira,
From the minute those two lines appear the worry starts and never ends!! Hope all is ok for you and bub, my SIL friend had a similar problem and the ultrasound revealed her baby was having a grand ol' time systematically squeezing and releasing the umbilical cord...must get a bit boring cooped up in the womb all day!!
    All the best

    Hi Keira,

I know just what you are talking about and it scared the heck out of me too. I could tell it was completely different to hiccups as it was more her limbs shooting out and really jolty. Once she was born we noticed that she was still doing them and had her checked out by the midwife and the paed and she is fine. She is now four months and they have completely stopped, she still jolts a lot like the startle reflex and thus she is lying beside me now as she keeps waking herself up but in our case they aren't seisures.

We were advised to video tape them if they continued at home but by 6wks they had decreased so much it was hard to catch one. Def talk to your dr though to ease your mind

Sounds just like hiccups to me. DD had them terribly - almost all the time, but this baby has only had them once! Did you find out anything useful today?

Oh thanks all for your replies! I went to my appointment today at the hospital but they said they just think it's hiccups - not much help.

So i thought i'd wait because my OB appointment is 2moro at 4pm and he'll probably be able to delve into it a bit deeper and listen to yet another worried pregnant woman!!!

She's calmed down a lot today thank goodness, still got the jolts but not as much... maybe she is just bored!

Thanks again everyone for all of your help, i will post again 2moro when i know more!

i would let my gp know because that is included in the list of things when you should inform your hospital, midwife or your gp. if you are concerned about less movements or heaps of movements or anything different, contact your gp or midwife. i hope everything is fine. id let them check you. at least they have the facility to check your baby like ultrasound, etc. good luck

    Hey Keira,

Glad to hear that the hospital are saying it's hiccups...I hope that tomorrow's appointment with the Ob. is doubly reassuring...

Today, the hiccups my baby was having made me wonder whether I was actually in labour...they were so huge...thankfully, they have calmed down...and I went to the Ob. today...and I'm not in labour!

    Anyway...hope it goes well tomorrow...
