    Please help im worried sick

    Hi all,

I had a ultrasound today, which was very stressful for meas the sonographer wouldnt tell me anything and was very rude and it has had me very concrened all afternoon. I have not long opened my results and whilst everything seems to be perfectly normal it has noted that i have a Two Vessel Cord, can anyone please tell me exactly what this means and if it is something i should be worried about ? I have done a very breif google and it says buba can often has other structual defects that cannot be seen on a scan ....now i'm worried even more, what if my baby isn't healthy? What if something goes wrong? What can i do ?

Please anyone who has any information to give me would be greatly appreciate, thanks in advance x

Is there any way that you can ring your Dr/ Ob to see if they will talk to you?

I have no idea what the two vessel cord means, sorry.

Just wanted to offer some support.

there are a few threads on single umbilical artery. it is something that is more common than it seems, and more often than not results in NO problems for the baby. there are usually more scans later in the pregnancy to check fetal development, but please don't panic. i know a number of ladies with SUA bubbas who are all perfectly healthy now.

Westy, Sam was a SUA bub. He arrived early, for no obvious reason, as did a friend's baby who was also a SUA bub. Both arrived at 36 weeks and have no issues resulting out of their prematurity.

While SUA can lead to low birthweight and prematurity - it is by no means a given that it will happen. I've heard of just as many SUA bubs going post-dates.

SUA can also indicate cardiac and kidney defects as well as chromosomal disorders - the majority of which would have already been ruled out in either the 12 week or 20 week scans (when the SUA was detected).

You will likely have a few extra scans to check on growth and to have a closer look at the heart when bubs is bigger. Ours happened at 24 and 32 weeks. When Sam was born we were also sent for a routine kidney scan as a result of the SUA. I'm told that all these things are routine and very rarely pick up problems, but they do them just to be sure.

I hope this helps put your mind at ease a little.

    Hi

I wrote a thread about this awhile back seeking info for friends of mine (who bubs were born healthy). If you do a search (button at the top next to New posts) and put in 'single artery', there are quite a few threads.

    take care,

Don't worry yourself about it all. I'm sure if there was anything of great concern the Dr would have call you straight away as the imiging place would have emailed the results straight to him. The lady I had do my scan on Mon didn't say much either so I do think it's quite normal for them to not give you a full layout of what they saw. I don't even get to pick up my test results or even so much as get the images on a CD until I see my OB this coming Mon.

I hope everything goes really well for you. Googleing something can be the worst thing to do becasue a lot of the time it is over exadurated and to the extreme. Take care and I hope you can relax about it all soon. I know thats much easier said than done though hun

Thanks so much for all of your response ladies, it's nice to know that just because bubs does have a SUA doesnt mean that i cant go onto birth a happy and healthy baby.

Sorry for what might seem like a silly question but, why does having SUA cause bubs to be born early ? And if bubs is born early do they have to be in a special care ward for sometime?

BW...Nothing at all has been picked up on my 2 previous scans it was just my scan yesterday that they detected the 2 vessel cord. I'm just hoping and praying that i have a healthy bubs.

Hi, just thought id update you all. I have been to the Dr's and also the hospital and am going back on Tuesday this time to have a chat to the Anaesthetic Clinic.

I was told that SUA happens in about 2.5% of pregnancies there is no real reason as to why it happens. Things dont always go to plan and bubs has to be born via c/s at 32 weeks depending on the growth of bub and the level of fluids around bub if this happens these bubs usually do have other probems such as kidney issues, but this is closely monitored with scans every 4 weeks (which is what i will be having) and is only done when its absolutely necessary. Then there is also every possiblity you will carry bub to full term without any issues at all, which is of course what im hoping for.
