I'd keep watch with this, I don't want to scare you at all but it is a sign of high BP. If it keeps happening or you notice a head ache or anything else that maybe out of the ordinary I'd be heading off to the Dr to get it checked out. Always better to be on the safe side.![]()
I was just about to say that you really should get checked out. It can be a sign of pre-eclampsia (but not the only sign) or there may be other issues going on. It is a normal kind of thing in the last weeks of pregnancy but not second trimester.
It may be nothing at all, but it really is better to be safe, and if it is something at least you can work out how to manage it with your caregiver.
it turns out to be nothing!
Let us know how you go!
I have had extreme swelling in my legs, ankles & feet since 20 weeks, in my case it's just fluid retention, apparently making up for my petiteness! But, for other is can be a sign of pre-eclampsia, go and get your BP checked and a screen of your urine... High BP, protein in urine, headaches, visual disturbances, upper abdominal pain & swelling in the hands, face or feet are all signs of pre-eclampsia, you don't have to have all of them or even a few of them though so better to just go and get it checked out...
If, like me, all is well and your BP & Urine are fine, keep an eye on the other things for now but it's just fluid retention, our bodies are pumping alot of extra blood so circulation isn't quite what it used to be and fluid gets stuck in our legs & feet if we're on them too long, try ot get your feet elevated, preferably above your heart, the swelling should subside, also make sure you're drinking at least 3 litres of water as well, it's a bit of a push I know as we already feel bloated and can't stay off the toilet and you'd think we obviously have enough fluid haha but it does help alot, I found after a week of putting my feet up for half an hour every 4 hours and drinking the 3 litres of water, my feet were alot better, not perfect, but better... Another thing you could try is wearing compression stockings, I haven't gone down that path but it was suggested by my midwives, either way, discuss it all with your Ob/Midwives/GP, get it all checked out and they should be able to advise you on your best course of action...
Congrats on your pregnancy by the way and best of luck with everything!!

Hi I always get swollen feet, this time I can feel it in my legs as well..Everytime i go to the docs i have a urine test done as well as BP, all is okay!!! maybe you could request that these things are done as well for peace of mind...otherwise like me, it is fluid retention (very attractive look) rest when you can with your feet up, remember you still need to drink. I find its always worse when we get warmer weather... great with summer ahead![]()
So i went to see a GP last night as i cant see my MW unitll next weekend
he checked my BP and said it was normal and he was happy with it said i do have swelling and to try and keep off my feet and to get my MW to check my Urine and BP again when i go
i hope its all ok, HIGh BP really scares me

Thanks for the update! Good to hear that all is well. At least you know now that high BP is not the cause of the swelling. I hope you get some relief soon!
Hey shell just thought I'd add that I had extreme swelling in my feet and legs from about 20 weeks through til like 2mths post delivery!
My Obs was vigilant in monitoring BP and everything else and said that it just must have been my "weird pregnancy thing"!
What I did that helped a lot was acupuncture - I was drinking heaps of water, elevating my feet whenever I could (even working on a couch at work) but still really swollen, acupuncture helped reduce it a bit. As did pedicures that involved deep tissue massage - a bit ouchy but worth it!
GL!
So glad to hear all is well! Thanks for the update. These things are a bit scarey but I figure it's always better to have get it checked out just incase as you've done.
Take care
well i will get a urine test this sat when i see My MW, hope all is ok with that.
i have started drinking a lot more water , i usually drink a lot of water but iv tried to drink more, and i notice that it does help! very weird that it does but thats a good thing![]()
