Doctors and midwives don't seem so concerned with weight gain these days. They used to assume that if mum was gaining weight then bub was growing. Now they have ultrasounds etc to check bub and know that maternal weight gain doesn't have much to do with it.

With DD I had morning sickness during 1st tri and when she was born I weighed 3kg more than my pre preg weight. She weighed 3.5kg so I had actually lost weight. A week or so after birth when my milk was in and the fluid settled I was 6kg below my pre preg weight.

It isn't going so well this time. I've put on 4 or 5kg so far, but I didn't have morning sickness.

Last time I didn't put on any weight in the last trimester. I just couldn't fit much food in. If I ate too much I would have trouble breathing. Just not enough room in my abdomen for a baby, a big meal and my lungs!

All that being said I could stand to lose 20kg, so I'm overweight to start with.

Aside from all that info about me... It is normal for the weight to be spread out, not just on the tum. Lots of women get fat around the face. 8 to 12 kg is the average for a woman of healthy weight.

It is also perfectly acceptable to try not to gain much weight during pregnancy. Not by "dieting" as such, but see if an apple will satisfy your sweet craving before breaking out the chocolate. It can be hard for me to tell if I'm really craving something or I'm just using pregnancy as an excuse!
