    Fundal Height question

    Hi all.
I had my appoinment with Ob during the week (32 weeks), and he measured my FH. It measured at 34 weeks.
I only noticed it after I had left his rooms otherwise I would have asked him, and there is NO WAY ON GODS EARTH that I will google it.
Does anyone know what it could mean, or should I not bother about it?
People say I am carrying big, but have a scan at 34 weeks to check development/size and placenta as I was a really really small baby when born - OB is just checking to make sure things are still growing well.

My docotor told me that it is considered normal for the fundal height to be within plus or minus 3cm of the week of pregnancy you are in. With my first baby the fundal height was heigher then this & I was given an ultrasound to measure the baby. Both are fairly inaccurate measures though. Sometimes the fundal height varies depending on what position your baby is in & if your baby has a growth spurt ...

Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. Sarah

    Hi Blueflower
The fundal height measurement is very inaccurate. Many hospitals no longer check the fundal height. There are many reasons why the fundal height can be larger/smaller than your dates. Some of these reasons are
    position of the baby,
    mount of fluid.
Accuracy of the person doing the measuring.
    Mums position when being measured.
Don't worry hun. I'm sure that everything is ok.

    I agree with allan.

Fundal height can change between practitioners technique, where baby is laying, if engaged etc etc.

I have always measured 3-4 weeks less than i was (ie 36 weeks measured 31-32 etc).
Dr's thought i might have low fluid and had a scan and everything is fine. Bub is just petite :P

They also say that it is very inaccurate after 36 weeks although the midwifes at my hospital seems to still do it...

I think the best thing to use the fundal height is to see that there is a increase each week rather than how it correalated with your dates.

My first baby was 9lb 4oz and i measured 2-3cm out the whole pregnancy, now with this pregnancy i have been about the same again but a older midwife thought i was measuring really big so i was sent for a glucose test and it was normal and then every other midwife said that i was measuring normal and it could be that i am bigger (a nice way of saying fatter ) the baby is laying a different way, or just the plain old simple answer that i may just have bigger babies...which is the one im going for lol.

good luck i hope you can rest easy knowing its all very normal and you are not alone.

I just came from the doctor and at 34 weeks + 3 days, I am measuring about 33 cm. I heard this is fine but the doctor is sending me for an ultrasound which will take place in 3 weeks from now. I am confused as to why they are sending me for a scan if being a couple of cm plus or minus the week of pregnancy I am in is ok. It makes me a bit nervous. All my other ultrasounds dated the baby fine and his mearuements were good. I thought I felt him drop a bit lower the other day. could this be why he seems a bit small this week? Or maybe my due date is off? They really worried me!

Jenny - I wouldn't be too worried. I had my appointment yesterday 39+1 weeks and I measured 33cm which I have the last couple of weeks. I carry small and did last time too. DS was 3.1kg so quite normal.

At 33 weeks I was measuring 40 weeks. They are a little concerned for me because my baby was in the 95th percentile range at the last ultrasound.

You're measuring two weeks ahead, I wouldn't worry if they obs aren't.

My ob neither weighs nor measures me (I'm 30 weeks). He listens to the baby's heartbeat and feels my tummy to check growth/position.

He's quite young so I think one of the new school who attribute less importance to such stuff.

I wouldnt worry too much about it. My friend's fundal height measured a 3 weeks ahead and she was told that her baby would be at least 4kg but her little girl was born last week only weighing 3.2kg. My friend did have alot of fluid throughout her pregnancy which the OB said is what made it difficult to judge the babies size.

I measure spot on but am not counting on that for accuracy at all.I just hope my bubs isnt too big

At my appointment yesterday, mine was 28cm at 25+5wks and I can feel his head right up high at the top of my uterus and there is a big gap between his bum and my pelvic bone so it is higher just because of his position. I have had it drop right back once bubs have engaged too. Not worried about it at all.
