    High Blood Pressure

Anyone experienced high BP in the last trimester WITHOUT other symptoms of pre-eclampsia? I had an antenatal appt yesterday at 32 weeks and had two readings of 150/100 - doctor was worried enough that they recommended a day stay in the women's assessment unit for further monitoring to ensure that I wasn't having symptoms of pre-eclampsia.

The funny thing is all my blood and urine tests were clear, babys heart tracing was fine and in the course of 5 hours I had 4 more BP checks all of which were perfectly normal (around 110/75 or similar). I'm curious as to whether anyone else has experienced such a massive difference in blood pressure readings in a short period of time. It makes me wonder if there isn't a possibility of medical error at fault.

We all make mistakes but there's nothing more upsetting to a pregnant woman than to suggest she may have a condition such as this only to find there's no justification for the suggestion! Suffice to say I was just a tad worried and emotional yesterday.

No, have not heard of someting like that, sorry. But I do know that if you were maybe a little bit stressed/anxious that could have bumped your bp up quite a bit??

Did they not check your bp again after an hour or so? What was the reading then?

    Hi LachiesMum
It is not all that unusual for your BP to be a little high when visiting your GP. In fact we have a term for it, “white coat hypertension”. Your BP will also be increased if you have been having a stressful or exciting day. There is also a chance that your GP made an error when checking your BP but it would be very unusual to be that far out.

I had a peak in blood pressure a couple of weeks ago, it had spiked more than 20 points above (which like you is when they worry). Like you I was monitored & my blood pressure within 4 hours had dropped back 10 points so the concern was relieved. I knew it wasn't a medical fault as I was experiencing discomfort in my swollen fingers during that time & it pretty much subsided later when my BP dropped.

I have had PE & really it's great that they took it so seriously, my PE wasn't picked up until it was almost to late risking my life & my DD. It is a little worrying so I can understand your concern but better safe than sorry
