I'm getting chronic hip pain (right side) and have been for a week. I'm putting this down to working my rear end off and having all of a day off in a week (doesn't help when I don't get paid but that's another story!)
Now, what I wanted to ask, was with this horrible hip pain, is there anything I can do to reduce the aching/pain before I work each night?
I'm doing 6 nights straight on my feet for up to 7 hours at a time - and there's no chance of any light duties either - and I wanted to try and minimalise the pain I feel after every shift and reduce the pain I've already got before I start work.

Quit work? Rest alot at home?
You could see a physio and see if they are able to strap it. Or perhaps a chiro. Some hip pain can be due to your pelvis being out of line.
I get a lot of horrid pains during pregnancy and hip pain is one of them.
Being on your feet for such long hours certainly wouldn't be helping so maybe try some of these:
- heat packs
- fold a doona in half and put it under the fitted sheet on your side of the bed for extra padding when sleeping. A layer of foam from the likes of Clark Rubber would be great too
- sleep with a decent sized pillow between your thighs. I was using one of my BF pillows for quite a while but then it suddenly wasn't big enough to support me properly so I started using my more solid, thicker one and it's helped so much!
- Physio may help or you could try a chiro. I spent a lot of time at Southcare Physio at SJOG Murdoch when I was PG with DD and it helped a lot. They do acupuncture there as well.
- you may need some inserts in your shoes to provide more support. My dad suffers from hip pain and has to wear orthotics.
- get a belly belt/band to support your tummy. It's amazing how much pressure that removes from your hips and back. My physio ordered mine for me last PG.
I've really found the much bigger pillow between the thighs has made a massive difference for me this PG though. I even removed the dooma from under our sheets they've been so much better
I wish I could quit work, but we've just got no cash behind us so I need to stay working till my pay after Christmas (we'll hit struggle street from that date but it'll have to do) and I really do try to rest during the day before work, but the only rest I get atm is when Master W is sleeping (his favourite thing atm to do is run around the house and expect you to chase him - which is cute, except when I'm hurting)
The physio idea is a good idea, I think I might have to see how much is covered on your PHI
Thanks Taurean, I might have to investigate the belly bands. I've got long pillows which I find more comfy to sleep like I'm cuddling someone, so I think I may just have to try using that between my legs instead of downwards
I have SPD and it started off with hip pain.. don't leave it if you suspect you may have it. I didn't mention it to my midwife until I was 36 weeks and in agony and then was referred to the hospital physio. I take panadol and some nights strong pain if its really bad, my pharmacist said to only take the strong pain if its really bad as the codeine is constipating. Hope you get some relief soon.
You can go to the physio once (and yes you will get something back if you have ancillary cover) and get exercises that you can then do at home which helped - and you can do them standing up! I get debilitating hip pain with my pregnancies, so bad I can't walk at all from about 32 weeks - so I know what you mean! I also get it in my right hip, so lying on my left side (which you are supposed to anyway) with a pillow in between was OK, but it was only after massage and exercise that I got any kind of relief. Drugs were out for me as panadol would have done nothing for me as the pain is really nerve pain. I went to SJOG in Subiaco which has a physio/ sports medicine place which also runs ante natal classes, so that lady I got was fabulous and knew EXACTLY what to do. I remember walking out after hobbling in. I also had a hip belt which you can buy from the chemist and the physio aslo gave me a long stretchy belly band kind of thing (included in the consult fee) which was supportive too. Hope your hip doesn't get too bad for you.
