Severe back pain, should I be concerned?

Over the last 3-4 days I have had random back pain, it's like I just woke up one day wit it. Seems to be much worse in the evenings and last night I could barely walk, it was excruciating I woke up in so much pain I cried. The bulk of it is coming from the left hand side. Last night when I was laying n bed I tried to massage it, but it is too tender. If I push with my fingers the pain was intensified. It just doesn't feel like normal back pain to me. I was googling at 2am this morning and started to panic because everything was saying early labour, back labour etc. I have heaps of BH evey day, but no plug loss or anything else to suggest bub is coming. It feels deep too, not just like I pulled a muscle. Could it be kidney related maybe? Anyone else experienced this kind of back pain? It just doesn't feel right to me. I see my OB on Thursday.

Tasha - I too have bad back pain and have been in tears a few times. And it does feel like its in my kidneys. I have a spray from the chemist and it works a treat. Also a warm wheat bag helps. When I have been sitting down and go to get up I get stuck and it takes ages for me to take that first step. I have been tested for uti as some of the girls on here suggested it may be that, but was all clear. Good luck at your ob appt. Hopefully he can shed some light on it.

It's possible that you've pulled a muscle, or that your baby could even have dislocated a rib, but I think this is worth getting checked, since it could also be a kidney infection, which would need attention ASAP. Give your ob/midwife a call, or maybe just head into an urgent care clinic or something.
    All the best!

Thanks Vic and cricket. The house is a mess and all I can do is just sit here in pain Vic, I will ask the OB about that spray. I have wheat packs too. Cricket, a dislocated rib? Can that happen when pregnant!? Last night I had a really hot shower before bed and just let the water run on my back. But I still woke up in pain. Gosh I hope they can help me, this is definitely not fun

A friend of our family had big babies for her size, and one of them dislocated her rib with a good kick. OUCH! I think you'd know if you were carrying a baby that size, but anything is possible! Hope you can get a good answer and some relief soon!

    OMG! Ouch!

I have forced myself to get up and clean the kitchen and put some washing on and I feel a little better from moving about. It's just strange that it is in one specific area (flank kind of) and I haven't pulled any muscles. I googled kidney infections and it says back pain, frequent urination, fatigue etc. Wasn't helpful at all. I will keep an aye on it and ask my OB Thursday.

Definitely get it checked out. It could be a rolled rib. I get them in pregnancy, as all my bones seem to want to wander off in other directions. It's excruciating, but chiro helps. Do you know bub's position? I had it constantly with DS1 and it turns out his head was stuck under a rib, pushing it out of alignment.

That sounds delightful L&B! Bubs is head down, bum to the left and feet to the right. I hope she hasn't moved, doesn't feel like she has. I hope it eases, struggling today

I get what sounds like a similar pain on the left hand side of my lower back - it was so bad the other night i couldnt walk either - and i usually get a corresponding pain on the right hand side of my abdomen (that part feels like a pulled muscle). I second a previous posters advice to see the chiropractor - I see one weekly now I'm in the last weeks of pregnancy, it puts me back together.

It's horrible isn't it!? Unfortunately a chiropractor is definitely not in the budget But I actually slept ok last night after having some panadol. I just don't want to rely on them. Glad you found some relief with the chiro though

Hopefully you can get some relief soon Tasha. An Osteopath might be able to help with soft tissue work and your GP might be able to do you a care plan to reduce the cost of the treatment.

If you are planning to birth in a hospital, I wonder if there's a hospy physio that could help you. Might be free if your going public.

Thanks Frangipani Lou, I saw the hospital physio a few months ago because I had bad pelvis pain. I had surgery years ago on my hip and thought it would be a good idea to see a physio. They pretty much said it was just part of pregnancy and that was it. Even though from early on every time I lay flat my pelvis spasms and I can't get up on my own because of the pain. So I guess they weren't very helpful! Didn't bother rescheduling either.

Urgh. this is such the usual response that hospital care provides...oh it's just part of pregnancy...yes, yes it is, but it is also a really VALID thing. It hurts! rather than just fobbing you off and telling you to suck it up they should at least acknowledge it and provide advice on how to manage it.

    many hugs

This sounds exactly like what I had at 36.5 weeks. It would come and go and was excruciating. Hubby came home a few times from work because it was so bad. I was told it was muscle. Anyway it turned out to be pre labour. It lasted a week and a half and at 38 weeks it ramped up, still all in my back. I wasn't sure it was labour but then I felt waves of the same pain and 3 hrs later DS was born. I can't see how far along you are but if its pre labour hopefully it means your body is doing most of the hard work now. Good luck

    Fingers crossed Tasha
I knew all along it wasn't muscle and it turns out bub was lying on my back. The pain was radiating in my back, all on the right and into my hip.
I hope it's happening for you, it made for a nice quick labour for me. Hopefully it means the same for you!
