Its a stretch & sweep, lol. The ob will do an internal & run their finger around the cervix to try & motivate it to get things moving

Stretch and sweep. By the way, if you ask a question, and your doc says they'll answer it next week, you're definitely allowed to say 'no, I want to know now'. I mean, if you'd wanted to know next week you'd have asked next week, right?

All the best with it. You might find some of our induction articles and threads useful regarding what to expect and what might be involved and any risks. xo

Hi Bee, I believe it's intended ot bring on labour, yes. Whether it does or not is another question altogether. I think it's the first step for 'moving things along' before the use any drugs or more medically invasive methods.

ha ha ha ha how funny. I am such a geek sounds ouchie and grose. I am being induced cause bubs is measuring very very big and putting pressure on my back. I broke my back nearlly 6 years ago and was in a wheel chair. I am high risk csection and want to avoid it. Thanks so much for the info hun. Does it usually bring on labour?

It can, but really only if your cervix has already started the process anyway. I had one on a Monday with DD2 & she wasn't born til the Sunday 6 days later, so I don't think it did much in my case.
Hopefully you'll get lucky I had better luck with walking. Walked 2 kms the night before DS was born lol! I got him out early...That was my plan

It is uncomfortable, but the same as internals to check for dialation. Doesn't hurt really.

This might help with some of your questions.

Remember that you don't have to agree with ideas that your dr presents, and that you have the right to ask for time to consider the options before making a decision. I would be p!ssed off if a dr didn't explain what he was offering. It's your body, your choice.

Having an induction will increase your chances of having a c section. Have you looked at books on Active Birthing techniques? Using gravity and positioning (walking, supported standing, kneeling) can help bub head in the right direction, and help you to birth your bub.

    take care,

    Kate

I think you have a catch 22 if you're trying to avoid caesarian because of your back problems and yet being induced to avoid it... But good luck!!!! I haven't heard much success about the stretch and sweep but hopefully it works for you.

I had this done on my due date (on a friday), i found it very uncomfortable as I wasn't told what the Ob was doing he said he was just 'checking' my cervix!! I was in tears! It did start my labour that night, but I spent two days in bed resting like I had read that you should do in the early stages so my son was born on the sunday. I was never told this was a way of inducing the birth. I was given a sheet of paper showing how they rupture your membranes and told I would have to come in on monday for that procedure. I felt utterly violated and lied too after that. It was my mother in law who explained to me what they had done to me, not the Ob or midwife.

Linzy that is absolutely horrible! Worth followingup if you can - there is NO excuse for that sort of violation.

i'm having one done by the midwife on monday, will let you know how i go.... i have also read people saying it is more successful if a male does it, as they are rougher!!!

    linzy that sounds awful.

I had a s&s done twice (I think!) and it didn't work either time (DS was 9 days overdue). I was 1cm dialated and ended up being induced. If you want to avoid a c-section after being induced the only think I can think that would help would to be as upright as possible during the induction. I sat straddled on a chair with DS for a good while during labour and I really think that helped. Good luck x
