I got what I thought was some good advice the other day. To make sure you put a waterproof matress cover on your bed and when your close to your due date make sure you have plenty of towel on the seat in the car. They say that most times your waters will break in the middle of the night while in bed sleeping, hence the waterproof matress cover etc. I bought one on the weekend and already have it on the bed, I was pulling the electric blanket off anyway, so I thought I might as well.
But just curious where have your waters broken?
The first time, my waters were artifically broken when I was about 4-5cm dilated. The second time I walked into my loungeroom & felt a dribble! They kept leaking slowly overnight (started at 10pm) and I just slept with a pad on, but I never really had a big gush, just a constant slow leak.
My waters broke while I was in labour around half an hour before Jake was born (I only had a 2 hour labour though!)
I think a lot of ladies' waters break while they're in labour!
xxx
Mine broke in hospital every time - I was already in labour before it happened. The first two times, they were ruptured by the doctor, the third time it happened spontaneously right before I gave birth.
This is a subject close to my heart at the moment being only 3 days off my due date. First time round they broke when I got up to go to the loo in the middle of the night. I sat down on the loo and felt a bit of a gush and to be honest I just thought my pelvic floor had finally given up. I didn't realise what it was straight away.
Got back into bed and still felt like I was leaking a bit so I got up again and put on a pad. Then I got my first contraction! I had very mild contractions and the waters continued to leak very slowly, like a dribble, all through the night. A pad was fine to contain it. It was only a little gush here and there, so small that I still wasn't absolutely sure that it was my waters leaking.
I am planning on driving around sitting on a folded up beach towel just in case ...I've heard that amniotic fluid can ruin the car upholstery!
DS1 - artificially ruptured in hospital - 1 week early
DD - getting out of bed aroudn 5.30am to go to the toilet - on EDD
DS2 - on the toilet!!! Had just wee'd, wiped and about to stand up and had a gush and was mortified initially thinking I had wet myself and didn't even feel it - 11 days early
I was induced with the cervix gel and had to stay over night in hospital in a delivery suite....after a quiet night with no action (in my room), my waters broke suddenly whilst lying in bed early the next morning listening to another lady quite obviously going through the final stages of labour. I'm sure it was listening to the screaming that did it . Why I couldn't have my own maternity ward bed I'll never know.
I had a slight dribble while on the toilet and had a massive gush on the walk to emergency to get into maternity (was at 1.30am). Quite a nice look...walking like a penguin with amnio dripping down my legs through the emergency waiting room until a middie came down to collect me.
2 weeks early lying on a friends couch watching TV - luckily I was lying on my side and felt a trickle and rolled off the couch onto the tiled floor so that they just went all over me and the tiles and not on the couch!
I don't think I will be invited over to their place close to my EDD this time around
I slept on plastic (under the sheet with a towel inbetween) for the last month or so as I was so paranoid about this. I also put a towel on the car seat as I'd also heard about it ruining car seats.
In the end I didn't need either. My waters broke after several hours of labour at home and several more at hossy. It happened when the midwife was checking how dilated I was. I had been checked on arrival and was 6cms and it didn't break but it happened later on. The poor midwife got such a shock. I had to get changed as I was absolutely drenched in it.
Got to bed late, watched some movie and it was about 12:30. I of course sleep on the side of the bed furthest from the door. A day overdue, I had just had my second dose of castor oil about 2.5 hours before. I was laying elevated and rubbing my belly when I felt a funny pop, I looked at Juz and asked if maybe he had heard a noise. He looked at me strangely and my eyes got wide, I said 'Oh ****!!! I think my waters just broke!!!' I jumped up to standing on the bed, and I of course am the size of a small whale. I jump clear over Juz's legs and onto the floor and assume crossed legs and run as fast as I can to the loo like that. For me it was a massive gush, I was changing a pad every 20-30 mins. I managed to make it to the tiled floor nearly in time with just a few drips on the carpet.
So yes, be safer than sorry, mattress protector all the way, or some use a dollar store shower curtain. Waters stink a bit like semen and it is not easily washed out apparently so not a risk I will take this time. I am counting my blessings that I was able to move so fast last time and knew what it was.
with dd1 my waters broke while i was watching telly 2pm.... then went into labour
with ds they broke in bed while i was asleep (was a rough night) i knew something was in the midst of happening 4am heard the pop and jumped up leaked all the way to the shower and was insane the amount of fluid! had the carpet n matress cleaned hehehe =-) cnt really help where it happens
