moving to vic from qld - what grade

Hello all, we may be moving to Melbourne in 2008, my son who attends gr 5 now in Qld, he is 10 years old. Will be 11 in April. Will he still be going to grade 6 in Melbourne in 2008? I have emailed the Education Dept. in Victoria and they said depends on the school which grade he should be in. I always thought kids started earlier in Melbourne.....

    Thanks
    Caz

Im a primary teacher and I would assume that as long as he hasnt had any learning difficulties that would mean he would repeat grade 5, then grade 6 it is. I have students anywhere from 10-13 in my class depending on when they were born and when they started.

Children have to have turned 5 by end of April to start Prep. But you do have a choice to send them that year or send them the following year.

Generally overall broad band spectrum (lol) children turning 11 are in grade 5 but saying that his birthday is april he might be able to start gr6 next yr cause of when his birthday falls. It will depend on what the school you are attending to send him too says.

Have you chosen a primary school as yet? Maybe contact them (the principal)

I'm also a primary teacher and would say that if he is turning 11 in April that would make him a VERY young grade 6 student. Remember they go to secondary school in year 7 here so he would be young all the way through. Also because boys are "generally" less mature it might benefit him doing grade 5 in Vic. It wouldn't have to be like repeating if you explained it right. Also he might be okay now in grade 6 but would he cope being that young when he is in year 11 or 12? It's easier to start grade 5 now than to repeat year 12. It would also depend on how bright, organised, mature etc. your son is. Just a few thoughts!
