I'm looking for a basic sewing machine too - and I would be perfectly happy with one of these in the $100-$300 price range (on sale) but for some reason the Bear and MIL are determined to get me an expensive Bernina! I would actually prefer a cheaper one cause I don't know how often I will use it and after a year or so I will have a better idea of whether I need more features etc.
